Belarusian counting phrases in Somali
A target counting form is not always its ordinary plural
Belarusian nouns change form in numerical phrases according to source grammar. Somali also has special patterns around quantities, but the form following a numeral should not be selected by copying a source plural ending.
Nilsson’s grammar contrasts “búug”, book, with ordinary plural “buugaág”, books, while its counted expression “labá buug” means two books. The count is plural in meaning even though the noun resembles the singular citation form.
For a Belarusian order or inventory, read the numeral and noun together before judging the target number. A noun without the expected ordinary plural shape is not automatically an omission.
This matters when adapting a saved quantity. Replacing a number and then forcing an ordinary plural onto every Somali noun can damage a construction that requires its counting form.
Different nouns follow different counting patterns
The same grammar gives “labá bisadood”, two cats, using a counting form different from both the singular and ordinary plural illustrated for that noun. The book example is therefore not a universal rule to leave every target noun unchanged.
A Belarusian message counting books and one counting animals need separate lexical and grammatical checks. Similar source endings do not establish the same target counting pattern.
For a shopping or transport request, preserve the counted unit as well as the number. A phrase about two animals and one about two groups of animals can lead to different arrangements even if a target numeral appears correctly.
The accents in these examples follow the grammar’s teaching notation. They help analyse the documented forms; they should not be confused with a requirement to recreate Belarusian stress marking on the target noun.
The source gender of a noun does not decide the target paradigm
Belarusian has masculine, feminine and neuter nouns. Somali noun gender belongs to its own grammatical system. A translated noun should be checked within that system rather than assigned a target pattern solely from the source ending.
The fact that a source noun denotes a person or animal can supply lexical identity without determining every target agreement form. Preserve a specifically named mother, father or other relationship, while keeping grammatical gender distinct from biological identity.
For a clause containing a count and an adjective, identify the actual Somali noun phrase before reviewing the surrounding forms. A correct number cannot compensate for agreement selected from an unrelated target example.
We can require an additional inclusion decision
Belarusian мы does not independently distinguish whether the addressee belongs to the speaker group. Nilsson’s Somali pronoun description distinguishes inclusive and exclusive first-person plural resources.
For a source statement that we need two books, establish whether the reader participates in that need or merely receives the request from another group. Quantity and group boundaries are independent decisions.
The final target should therefore preserve both what is counted and who is involved. An accurate counting form cannot repair a pronoun that includes the wrong people, while a correct group reference does not prove that the item count was expressed through the right Somali construction.
