Belarusian to Setswana: keep book, reader and language references connected

A book list is more than a sequence of nouns

Belarusian noun phrases express number and relationships through inflection and agreement. Setswana has noun-class connections that can also appear on surrounding words. A translated Belarusian school message should therefore be checked as complete phrases, especially when it names several books, children or languages.

Nal’ibali’s bilingual material uses buka for a book and dibuka for books. The distinction is useful in a Belarusian library request: asking for one named title differs from requesting several reading materials. A target noun may carry number differently from the source, but the intended quantity still needs to be clear.

The NCHLT Setswana annotation documentation separately identifies subject, object and possessive concords by class. This supports a practical review method: after changing the target noun or its number, inspect the words connected to it rather than assuming that replacing the noun alone completes the revision.

Which language is the book in?

The Nal’ibali interview discusses reading in several languages and gives Setswana alongside English. For a Belarusian-to-Setswana message about education, distinguish the language being taught, the language of a book and the language used to communicate with the reader. These may be three different languages in the same sentence.

Do not allow an intermediate gloss to turn Belarusian into Russian merely because the source uses Cyrillic. If the message names the source language, preserve that identity. Likewise, a sentence asking for Setswana material should not be satisfied by a target phrase that merely mentions a school or a translated book without specifying its language.

This matters for an order or reading recommendation. The recipient may recognize the author and title while receiving material in the wrong language. Keep the identifying language phrase connected to the intended book, rather than translating it as a separate comment about the speaker.

Reading for somebody is a participant relationship

Nal’ibali’s parallel interview distinguishes being told stories as a child from reading to one’s own children. When a Belarusian message describes shared reading, identify the reader, the listener and the story separately. Translating the main action without those roles can reverse who provides the reading.

The published Setswana example Ke rata go dira ka bana corresponds to enjoying work with children in its interview context. Such a complete example is more useful than treating every occurrence of a familiar action word as interchangeable. The words around the action explain how the participants are connected.

Belarusian case and prepositional phrases provide evidence about those roles. Read them before reorganizing the target sentence. A child listening to a story and a child reading independently are different situations, even if both source messages contain the words child and book.

Save the educational phrase with its purpose

For this direction, keep the whole request or explanation when saving a translation: the number of books, the intended language and who will read to whom. A detached vocabulary pair cannot preserve all three relationships.

The final check is practical: could the Setswana reader select the right quantity of material, in the right language, for the intended reader or listener? That assessment connects the grammatical comparison to what the Belarusian message actually needs to accomplish.
