Belarusian to Sesotho: plural nouns change more than the end of a word

Count the items before choosing the noun-class pattern

Belarusian commonly changes the ending of a noun when moving between singular and plural. Sesotho often changes a prefix, and the choice belongs to the noun’s class rather than to a single universal plural rule. A Belarusian plural ending therefore cannot be replaced by one Sesotho prefix attached indiscriminately to every translated noun.

The Peace Corps course gives buka and libuka for book and books, but ntlo and matlo for house and houses. Both pairs express a number contrast, yet they use different plural patterns. For a Belarusian inventory containing books and houses, preserve the quantity of each item without treating li- and ma- as interchangeable versions of a generic plural.

A change of noun can require changes elsewhere

Sesotho noun classes also guide associated agreement. Replacing a noun while retaining all the surrounding markers from a previous translation can leave the sentence inconsistent. The course explicitly teaches noun classes alongside subject concords and other linked forms. Correctly translating a Belarusian noun is therefore only one part of rebuilding its target phrase.

Belarusian has agreement too, but its masculine, feminine, and neuter categories do not map directly onto Sesotho noun classes. The feminine gender of кніга, book, does not identify the Sesotho agreement pattern by itself. Nor should a neuter Belarusian object automatically receive one fixed Sesotho equivalent of it.

In a message about several objects, reconnect each pronoun or descriptive phrase to the noun it actually refers to. A statement that a book is available followed by a statement that houses are unavailable changes both the referent and number. Carrying the first clause’s agreement into the second can obscure that change even when the vocabulary is correct.

Belarusian counted forms are not a target plural recipe

Belarusian number phrases have their own patterns. Два, two, is used with masculine or neuter nouns, while дзве accompanies feminine nouns, and the forms of counted nouns require their own grammatical analysis. These source distinctions establish quantity and agreement within Belarusian; they do not instruct the translator to assign an equivalent gender to the Sesotho numeral phrase.

For a booking or stock message, first recover the actual count and the lexical item being counted. Then form the Sesotho noun phrase according to that item’s class. A Belarusian word ending that resembles a genitive form should not be mistaken for ownership if it belongs to a counted expression.

This distinction is useful when a short list drops verbs and repeats only quantities. The absence of full clauses makes it easier to confuse a counted noun form with a separate possessive relationship. Read each quantity with its noun before translating the list.

A final Sesotho review should therefore follow the items across the message: singular or plural, which noun class, and which later words refer back to them. That preserves the Belarusian count while allowing the target to express agreement through a different grammatical system.
