Belarusian to Rundi: noun classes connect the phrase

Plurality can change several linked words

Belarusian noun phrases show agreement through gender, number and case. Rundi organizes much of its agreement through noun classes and their associated prefixes. A Belarusian-to-Rundi translation should therefore be reviewed as a connected phrase, not as a noun whose ending has been changed independently.

Cox’s Kirundi course contrasts umuhungu, boy or son, with abahungu, boys or sons, and illustrates corresponding verbal agreement. If a Belarusian message changes from one child to several children, the Rundi result may need related changes beyond the noun. Keeping the old predicate while replacing only the item count can leave the sentence internally inconsistent.

Do not equate a Rundi noun class with the sex of the person described. The target class controls grammatical connections; a Belarusian gender label does not choose a target prefix by itself. Translate the actual noun first, then review the agreement required by that chosen Rundi word.

Ownership refers to the item as well as the owner

The course describes a possessive expression with one part agreeing with the thing owned and another referring to its owner. Its example umwana wanje means my child. The target ownership phrase therefore cannot be selected solely from the person who possesses something.

Belarusian also has possessive agreement, but its forms should not be transferred directly onto the Rundi phrase. In a message about a relative’s belongings, distinguish how many items there are from how many owners are involved. A target agreement change may concern the item rather than introduce a different owner.

This distinction becomes important when a source mentions several people and several objects. Trace each object back to its owner before accepting the target. A recognizable family noun and a plausible possessive can still combine to identify the wrong person’s property.

A location depends on the event around it

Cox explains mu and ku with a range of spatial uses whose interpretation depends on the accompanying verb. For a Belarusian journey description, preserve whether the person is inside a place, moving into it or coming out of it. A target spatial word alone may not identify all those distinctions.

Read the Belarusian preposition and noun case with the motion verb. If a pickup instruction names where something comes from, do not approve a Rundi sentence merely because it mentions the same place. The action must preserve the source–destination relationship rather than just the location name.

A greeting is a conversational act

The Kirundi course distinguishes the first greeting of the day from later encounters. A Belarusian greeting should therefore be interpreted as part of an exchange rather than translated only by its literal time-of-day wording. Establish whether this is the first meeting or a renewed conversation before reusing a saved Rundi greeting.

For Belarusian-to-Rundi messages, check noun-class agreement, ownership and the route described by the predicate. Then read the opening as a greeting addressed to this reader in this situation. These checks preserve relationships that can be distributed differently across the two languages, even when the main vocabulary seems straightforward.
