Belarusian to Portuguese (Portugal): keep an object’s location separate from a note about it
Recognise the furnishing behind its changing ending
A Belarusian handover note may mention a table, describe something resting on it, and later discuss moving it. The noun can change its ending while continuing to identify the same furnishing. When translating into Portuguese for Portugal, follow that referent through the message instead of treating each spelling as a different object.
Marchant’s declension table gives стол as the basic form, стала as genitive singular, and на стале in the prepositional row. The table documents the noun’s changing grammatical shape. It does not license replacing every occurrence with one unchanged Portuguese word and discarding the surrounding relationship.
The Portuguese dictionary provides another reason to inspect the whole phrase. Priberam lists spatial senses for sobre as well as the sense concerning a topic. A note about a table and a note physically lying on a table are different descriptions, even if an isolated English gloss suggests on for both.
Trace the keys, the envelope, and the note separately
Imagine a Belarusian-speaking host leaving keys for a guest in Portugal. The host mentions a table beside the entrance and an envelope associated with the keys. This original accommodation scenario requires distinguishing a direct location from a chain of containers: keys on the table are not necessarily keys inside an envelope on the table.
If the source says where the envelope is, keep that location attached to the envelope. Do not silently attach it to every item mentioned earlier. Conversely, if the keys are described as lying loose, inserting an envelope creates a false search instruction. The recipient should be able to identify what to look for before deciding where to look.
A subsequent sentence might explain that a written note concerns moving the table. That describes the note’s subject matter, not its physical resting place. Preserve both facts if the source states both, but do not use the topic of the note as evidence that it must be waiting on the furnishing it discusses.
A lower position is not automatically a concealed container
Priberam describes debaixo de in terms including a lower position and being covered by something; it also records non-spatial uses. The wording therefore needs the physical setting. An object underneath a table is not thereby inside a drawer, and something covered by a cloth need not be below the furniture itself.
A missing key makes these distinctions practical. The guest may need to look at the tabletop, inside the specified envelope, or below the table. Retain only the relationship supported by the Belarusian message. Adding a plausible drawer, box, or hiding place can waste the guest’s time despite producing a fluent Portuguese sentence.
Read the handover translation by tracking one object at a time. Identify the furnishing despite its Belarusian inflection, connect each location phrase to the object it actually describes, and distinguish physical placement from subject matter. This approach preserves the host’s intended directions without turning grammatical variation into extra furniture or extra steps in finding the keys.
