Belarusian possession and Northern Kurdish linking

A target link marks the possessed expression

Belarusian can identify an owner through a genitive noun phrase and related possessive constructions. Northern Kurdish, or Kurmanji, uses linking material commonly called ezafe. The target link should not be interpreted as a genitive ending copied onto the owner.

The Kurmanji case documentation explicitly describes construct marking on the possessed noun rather than the possessor. Its “sala 1940’ê”, year of 1940, and “salên”, years of, illustrate a linking relationship built into the target noun phrase.

For a Belarusian message about somebody’s document, first identify the document and its owner. Then review where the link appears in the Kurmanji expression. Putting a plausible ending on the wrong noun can reverse or obscure the relationship despite preserving both lexical nouns.

A source case distinction is not reproduced by an identically named form

Belarusian has nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, instrumental and locative cases in the cited description. Kurmanji has its own direct and oblique patterns, as well as construct and vocative resources.

The documented “sal”, year or years, contrasts with oblique “salê”, year, and “salan”, years. These are related forms, not automatically interchangeable translations of a Belarusian case label.

If the source mentions a year within a date, duration or modifying phrase, identify the relationship to the rest of the sentence. A calendar reference can require different target grammar from a simple list entry naming a year.

This check is also useful when source nouns are heavily inflected. Recover the noun’s identity and role before choosing the target form; do not mistake a grammatical ending for an additional lexical meaning.

Past transitive participants need their own review

Thackston’s Kurmanji grammar describes differences between past transitive constructions and other clause types. A Belarusian actor identified by its own nominative pattern cannot simply remain in a source-shaped target form in every tense.

For a source statement that somebody sent or bought an item, establish the actor and the affected object before reviewing the target. Past-event translation is not complete when only the time reference and main lexical verb look correct.

A possessive owner can appear in the same sentence without being the actor. A document’s owner, the person who sends it and the person receiving it may all differ. Keep these roles separate through the target construction rather than allowing the most prominent noun to become the actor by default.

Select Kurmanji consistently

Northern Kurdish is a specific target with grammatical differences from other Kurdish varieties. A form found in a Sorani resource should not be substituted merely because both resources use the broad name Kurdish.

Likewise, the Latin spelling used for Kurmanji is not a transliteration system for Belarusian Cyrillic. Preserve the actual target words and their diacritics, including the distinction between a plain vowel and a marked vowel in an inflected form.

For the final review, trace ownership and event roles through the entire target sentence. Consistent script and familiar-looking regional vocabulary cannot repair a misplaced linking ending or a past clause that assigns the action to the wrong participant.
