Belarusian to Kinyarwanda: make the reply’s purpose clear

Unable to attend is different from declining without explanation

A Belarusian invitation and its reply can express acceptance, future availability or inability. Kinyarwanda has useful distinctions among these responses. Before translating a short answer, establish whether the source commits the speaker to attend, says that they cannot come, or only reports that they will be elsewhere.

The Peace Corps course gives sinshobora kuza, I cannot come, and distinguishes it from expressions for not being available. In a Belarusian scheduling exchange, preserve the explanation actually supplied. Do not turn an inability into a general rejection of the invitation or add an obstacle that the source never mentioned.

Belarusian conditional wording can make a request or reply tentative. Keep that force separate from the future event itself. A date in both texts does not prove that the target preserves whether the speaker promises, hopes or is unable to attend. Review the response with the invitation instead of pasting an isolated negative fragment.

Where somebody is and what somebody is are different constructions

The Kinyarwanda teaching material distinguishes ari in a location statement from ni in a statement of characteristics. Its examples include Mupemba ari mu biro, Mupemba is in the office, and John ni muremure, John is tall. Both may correspond to a Belarusian clause without an overt present linking verb, but they need different target constructions.

When a Belarusian status line names a person and a workplace, decide whether it gives their current location or identifies their occupation. The same institution name can occur in both kinds of message. A target sentence that names the right person and place can still answer the wrong question.

Do not insert one general Kinyarwanda equivalent of be wherever Belarusian leaves the link unwritten. First decide whether the clause locates, describes or identifies. Then review the complete target expression. This keeps an office update from becoming an unintended claim about the person’s identity or qualities.

Greeting form can signal the relationship

The course illustrates Uraho and Muraho and explains plural forms as a way of sounding formal in the relevant greeting patterns. A Belarusian greeting addressed to one person can therefore appropriately receive a target form that looks plural. Actual audience size and respectful address should be checked separately.

Keep the relationship consistent after the greeting. If a Belarusian message opens politely to a colleague and then asks about an appointment, the translated reply should continue addressing that reader in the intended way. Do not normalize every plural-looking target element to singular simply because only one recipient is named.

Review the exchange, not only its keywords

Belarusian case and verbal forms help distinguish participants and events. In a Kinyarwanda message, check those same facts through the target’s whole phrases: who is invited, where the person is, and what kind of answer they give. A correct translation of the meeting place does not establish a correct acceptance.

For this language direction, save the invitation and response together when a phrase is worth reusing. The surrounding exchange explains whether a greeting is formal, a statement is locational and a negative answer expresses inability. That context makes a saved translation more useful than a detached yes-or-no expression.
