Belarusian to Gujarati: checking agreement in a completed-work report

A past ending need not describe the worker

Belarusian past forms distinguish gender and number, but not person. Gujarati has a different agreement pattern in ordinary transitive perfective constructions: the verb can agree with the direct object rather than the person carrying out the action. A changed ending therefore does not automatically mean that a translated report identifies the worker incorrectly.

For a Belarusian update about finishing a job, identify both the worker and the completed item. Do not check the Gujarati verb solely against the worker’s gender. The relevant agreement may concern the work or object instead, depending on the construction.

This distinction matters when a team reuses a completion message. Changing the person’s name is not necessarily what changes the target verb form; replacing the completed item can matter too. Translate the revised statement as a whole instead of treating its final verb as a reusable label for one particular worker.

Completion is not simply any mention of the past

Gujarati agreement depends on the grammatical construction, not just on a calendar expression such as yesterday. The linguistic study by Hook and Modi contrasts an object-agreeing completed action with a subject-agreeing intransitive past event. An arrival report and a report of work done should not be forced into the same agreement pattern.

Keep the Belarusian action clear: did someone arrive, work on an item, or complete it? These statements can concern the same day while reporting different things. Adding yesterday cannot replace the distinction between an activity and its completed result.

Belarusian aspect provides useful information about how an action is presented, but it is not permission to copy Belarusian inflection onto a Gujarati verb. Preserve the event’s meaning and participants, then allow the target language to express their relationship through its own forms.

A marked actor is still the actor

In relevant Gujarati perfective constructions, the person doing an action can appear with ergative marking. This grammatical marking does not turn the worker into the recipient of the action. Keep the actual event roles separate from the surface appearance of the noun or pronoun.

For a handover note, distinguish the person who prepared an item from the person receiving it. Name both if the original Belarusian conversation used short pronouns that would be unclear out of context. A recipient and an actor can be equally prominent in the message without controlling the same grammatical relationship.

Do not repair complex verbs with a one-line rule

Hook and Modi also examine variation in Gujarati constructions meaning begin, where simple generalizations about subject marking are insufficient. This is a reason to avoid mechanically applying the basic completed-action pattern to every sentence containing more than one verb.

If the Belarusian message says work began rather than work finished, retain that distinction. Do not simplify the source merely to obtain a shorter target sentence. The difference determines whether a colleague can proceed with the next task or must wait for completion.

For the final check, identify the actor, the affected item, and the actual stage of work. Then review the complete Gujarati construction. A verb ending that differs from the Belarusian worker’s gender can be legitimate; a statement that changes started into finished is a change of meaning that needs correction.
