Belarusian to German: case information, descriptions and passive events

German articles can carry what the noun does not show

Belarusian noun phrases use case and agreement to identify relationships. German also has case, but its noun forms can be ambiguous, with distinctions often visible on the article. When a Belarusian sentence is translated into German, inspect the complete noun phrase rather than deciding that an unchanged noun must be missing an ending.

The German contraction zum combines zu and dem. A single target word can therefore contain a preposition and an article. If a Belarusian directional phrase becomes such a contraction, it has not necessarily lost a word. Check its grammatical role and reference before expanding or removing the form to make the languages line up visually.

Both languages have masculine, feminine and neuter nouns, but the chosen translation may not belong to the same gender. Build the German article and adjective forms around the German noun. The source noun’s gender remains useful for understanding Belarusian agreement, not for selecting the target article automatically.

A description is not an incomplete sentence

The Belarusian UD account allows nominal clauses without an overt copula. German normally supplies sein for identification, description and location. The reference example er ist alt means he is old. A short Belarusian description can therefore require a visible German verb even when the source has no separately written equivalent of is.

Do not confuse this with an availability statement. Belarusian няма means there is no, while German has a distinct existential pattern, illustrated by es gibt Essen, there is food. When translating a notice about supplies, decide whether it states existence, identifies an item, or locates something already known. Those meanings require more than inserting a generic be verb.

Is the action happening, or is the result already present?

Duden distinguishes German event passive with werden from state passive with sein. Its horse example contrasts the process of saddling with the horse being saddled already. This is a useful distinction when a Belarusian repair or preparation update focuses on an affected item instead of naming the worker.

Belarusian has passive constructions too, including participial forms. But the target choice still depends on the source message’s meaning: work in progress, a completed result, or an action narrated at another time. Selecting a German auxiliary from the surface appearance of a Belarusian participle can change the practical status being reported.

For a workshop update, keep the affected item separate from whoever performed the work. A passive sentence does not require the translator to invent an agent. Equally, if the Belarusian source names the responsible person, preserve that information where it belongs rather than treating every passive as a reason to delete responsibility.

Check meaning before comparing word counts

A Belarusian-to-German result may add an article, an explicit copula or an auxiliary while contracting other pieces into one word. Those changes are expected consequences of rebuilding the sentence. Review the item’s role, whether it exists or is merely described, and whether the reported work is an event or a resulting state. These checks are more revealing than demanding one German word for each Belarusian word.
