Belarusian to Canadian French: making a proposed appointment mean the right day

Fin de semaine can mean the weekend

For Canadian French correspondence, fin de semaine is an established expression for the weekend, generally Saturday and Sunday. The Québec terminology office labels this use Québec/Canada. Do not read the expression only as a literal reference to the final working days of a week.

If a Belarusian message proposes meeting toward the end of the working week, specify Thursday or Friday when that is what you mean. A translation using a familiar Canadian expression for the weekend could otherwise change the recipient’s expected availability. The issue is the period intended, not whether the French words look familiar.

Conversely, a weekend invitation need not be rewritten with European vocabulary to sound correct. The terminology office notes that week-end also occurs in Québec, alongside fin de semaine. Regional suitability is a choice within actual usage, not evidence that every Canadian speaker follows one exclusive vocabulary list.

A timetable and a deadline list need different names

The Québec language office discourages cédule when it means a schedule borrowed from English. Its suggested alternatives depend on the document: horaire, calendrier, programme, and échéancier do not all describe exactly the same information. Choosing a locally appropriate word still requires identifying what the Belarusian document contains.

For an appointment confirmation, distinguish the available times from the programme of activities after arrival. For a project meeting, distinguish the meeting time from the deadlines the participants will discuss. A single source label meaning plan may need a more precise French expression once its practical purpose is known.

Do not automatically remove cédule from a quoted specialist document. The office recognizes established uses in particular fields, including finance and law. In ordinary scheduling correspondence, however, there is usually no reason to introduce that specialist-looking word in place of a clear description of times or deadlines.

Preserve the relationships expressed by Belarusian forms

Belarusian nouns change through a case system. Marchant’s declension tables illustrate how the same noun appears in different forms according to its grammatical role. When translating a short appointment note, retain the prepositions and endings that show relationships rather than reducing the source to a list of dictionary forms.

The relevant practical distinctions include the person receiving the confirmation, the place of the meeting, and the period being reserved. Put each in a complete source statement if an abbreviated note could be read in several ways. A Canadian French date expression cannot supply a missing relationship between the meeting and its deadline.

Keep availability separate from confirmation

When a Belarusian correspondent offers several possible days, preserve that as a proposal. Do not compress it into a French heading that appears to announce an agreed appointment. List the alternatives and retain the sentence asking the recipient to choose, particularly when one option falls on the weekend.

After a time is agreed, confirm the named day and date alongside the chosen time. This makes the intended meaning of fin de semaine checkable against the actual appointment. It also keeps the schedule document, the proposed meeting, and any project deadlines from becoming one ambiguous instruction.
