Belarusian to Fijian: what a possessive phrase leaves unsaid

A possessive can identify an owner without identifying a use

Belarusian possessives commonly change their form to agree with the noun. In мой какос, my coconut, the masculine possessive matches the masculine noun. It does not tell a reader whether the coconut is for eating, drinking from, planting, or selling. Fijian can require a relationship that this short Belarusian phrase leaves open.

The UK Linguistics Olympiad’s Fijian dataset illustrates three choices: na mequ niu for a coconut intended for drinking from, na kequ niu for one intended for eating, and na noqu niu for ordinary ownership such as selling or picking it. These are not three spellings of one interchangeable possessive. They demonstrate how the intended relationship can change the construction while the coconut and possessor remain the same.

Translate the surrounding activity, not the noun category alone

A Belarusian shopping note may identify a coconut as mine without saying what will happen to it. A recipe, a refreshment request, and an inventory for sale provide different missing information. In a Fijian translation, choosing the drinking pattern merely because coconuts contain liquid would add an intention that the source might not support.

The same reasoning applies when a Belarusian speaker repeats a possessive in successive sentences. Agreement can change because the nouns have different genders or cases; that does not necessarily signal a new owner. Conversely, an unchanged Belarusian owner can stand in different relationships to different items. Check the activity attached to the possession instead of matching a Belarusian possessive ending with one fixed Fijian expression.

The Olympiad explicitly describes its system as simplified. Its examples are useful evidence of these distinctions, not a complete dictionary of every Fijian noun and possession construction. A relationship involving consumption should be checked as a relationship, rather than reduced to a rule that all food always takes one classifier.

Ownership and personal reference need separate checks

Belarusian мой, мая, and маё can all identify the same first-person owner while matching different nouns. Their gender does not reveal whether that owner is a man or woman. This is easy to misread in a fragment where the noun is separated from the possessive by formatting or a line break. Reconstruct the complete Belarusian phrase before deciding what the Fijian possession refers to.

A further issue arises with our. Belarusian can leave it unspecified whether the addressee belongs to the group. Fijian distinguishes inclusive and exclusive reference, and distinguishes group sizes in ways that a simple Belarusian plural may not specify. An invitation to share a drink and a statement about supplies reserved for the speaker’s team can therefore need different choices.

For this direction, useful context is very concrete: who owns or uses the item, what they intend to do with it, and whether the listener is included. Those details resolve grammatical decisions that the Belarusian agreement endings alone cannot settle.
