Making Belarusian sentence relationships explicit in English

Recover the grammatical roles before choosing English order

Belarusian case endings help identify the relationship of a noun to the rest of a sentence. English often needs a more explicit order and separate prepositions. A word near the beginning of a Belarusian clause is not necessarily the person doing the action, and the nearest recognizable name is not automatically the English subject.

In a message about receiving, sending or showing a document, establish who acts, what is affected and who receives it. Then form the English sentence around those roles. If the source leaves an agent genuinely unstated, do not improve the wording by inventing a company or customer as the actor. A natural English passive may preserve what the writer actually knows.

English ‘be’ may need to appear where Belarusian is concise

A short Belarusian present statement can omit an overt counterpart of English am, is or are. English generally needs that verb in an ordinary complete description or location statement. ‘Я дома’ becomes ‘I am at home.’ Adding am makes the English construction complete rather than adding new information about the speaker.

A heading or status label may still work as a fragment, so match the intended text type. A brief app status and a full email sentence do not always need identical expansion. Check that the English reader can tell whether the line states a current location, names a destination or asks where someone is.

A past ending does not tell you the English person by itself

Belarusian singular past forms distinguish gender but not the English first-, second- and third-person categories in the same way. The associated pronoun, name or conversation identifies who performed the action. Do not turn a feminine past ending into she automatically if the source is a woman writing about herself.

‘Я была дома’ is ‘I was at home’ when the female speaker describes her own location. English does not require a feminine form of was. The gender information present in the source may therefore disappear naturally from this sentence. Keep it only where it identifies a person or matters to the content, rather than adding an unnecessary explanation of the speaker’s gender.

Read aspect and time together

Belarusian verbs can distinguish an action viewed as a process or repeated activity from one viewed as a completed whole. English may express that difference through a simple, progressive or perfect construction, depending on the time and purpose of the sentence. A dictionary equivalent alone does not settle the whole English verb phrase.

A reading form such as ‘чытаў’ can require ‘read’ or ‘was reading’ in different contexts. Decide whether the writer reports a completed event, describes what was happening at a particular moment or states a habit. Keep dates and duration expressions with the verb during translation. In a practical update, these distinctions can determine whether a task is finished or still needs attention.

Keep identifiers recognizable through the script change

Belarusian personal and place names should retain an established supplied English spelling when one is already used in the relevant booking or account. Do not silently replace a Belarusian name with a different language’s equivalent. Translate the message around the identifier, and compare that identifier separately with the source record before sending.
