Belarusian person reference in Dari

A single target pronoun can preserve several source forms

Belarusian pronouns distinguish grammatical roles, including subject and object forms. The International Assistance Mission grammar gives Dari “من” for I or me. A source distinction need not appear as two different target pronoun words.

For a Belarusian message involving an individual and a recipient, trace the role each pronoun plays through the entire clause. A shared target form does not merge actor and affected participant; the construction must still express their different relationships.

The source’s case form is evidence for meaning, not an ending to append to the Dari pronoun. A target can use fewer visibly distinct pronoun forms while accurately preserving who acts and who receives something.

Gendered past agreement need not become target gender marking

Belarusian singular past verbs can distinguish masculine and feminine subjects. Dari has no corresponding grammatical-gender distinction in the ordinary pronoun system described by the IAM grammar.

The target “او” covers he, she or it. A source statement with a gendered pronoun or past ending can therefore be translated without a separate male-versus-female pronoun choice. Preserve a named person or stated family relationship where the source supplies it.

If two people appear in a source paragraph, neutral target reference may still require clarification of the antecedent. The absence of gender marking does not justify assuming that every later pronoun concerns the same person.

For a first-person report, do not create a target suffix merely to imitate a source ending. Identify the speaker and the event, then let the Dari construction express them through its own agreement.

A respectful plural can address one person

The IAM grammar contrasts “تو” with “شما”, explaining that the latter can address a group or show respect to one person. A Belarusian courteous expression should therefore be read for its actual audience before target number is selected.

For a message to one host, respectful address need not create several hosts. For an instruction to a whole team, preserve the actual group rather than treating every polite-looking form as singular.

The grammar also describes variation in formal and everyday Dari. An expression appropriate in a written notice need not be the identical expression used in a casual conversation. Use the source relationship and purpose rather than searching for one permanently correct polite pronoun.

A subject can be understood without a repeated pronoun

Dari verbal agreement can identify a subject even when the independent subject pronoun is omitted. The grammar illustrates an explicit first-person statement and a shorter counterpart with the same actor.

A Belarusian translation should therefore be assessed for whether the speaker remains recoverable, not simply whether a separate word matches я in every target clause. An omitted pronoun can be natural, while an omitted participant relationship can still be a real error.

For a message with several actors, follow each predicate carefully. The target agreement and context must still identify the intended person. A shorter-looking sentence is acceptable only when it preserves the source’s actor, event and any necessary contrast between participants.
