Belarusian to Traditional Chinese: identifying the document inside a long description

Find the document that the description belongs to

A Belarusian document request can contain several names and descriptions whose relationships are supported by case and agreement. Chinese noun phrases organize those relationships differently. Oxford’s grammar explains constructions in which a description, including a clause, appears before 的 and the noun it describes.

For an instruction concerning a report that a colleague reviewed, identify the report as the item being requested. The colleague and the reviewing action help identify that report. A translator needs to preserve that relationship rather than turning the description into a separate instruction to review something.

Keep the document and its identifying information together in the Belarusian source. If several versions are mentioned, say which version carries the review. Otherwise a grammatically plausible Chinese phrase may describe the wrong attachment while still containing all the expected names.

Do not rearrange a long Chinese noun phrase merely to make the document name appear earlier. First locate the noun that the preceding description modifies. Its later position can belong to the target construction rather than indicate that the translator has mistaken it for a new topic.

Ownership and an identifying action are different relationships

Oxford also describes 的 in possessive expressions. The same written particle can therefore occur in a phrase identifying an owner or in a phrase describing an item through an action. It is not a universal instruction to read every preceding person as the legal owner of the following document.

Distinguish a report belonging to a department from a report reviewed by its manager. The manager may have reviewed a document that belongs to somebody else. In Belarusian, make authorship, review, approval, and ownership explicit whenever the distinction affects what the recipient should send.

If a source phrase uses a person’s name as shorthand for a document, expand that shorthand before translating. The manager’s report could mean a report the manager wrote, received, approved, or is responsible for. A fluent Chinese possessive expression cannot establish which of those relationships the writer intended.

The Oxford material also notes that 的 is omitted in some constructions. Do not add it mechanically between every pair of nouns, or remove repeated instances simply because they look redundant. Review each complete noun phrase and the relationship it expresses.

A shorter reference still needs an identifiable missing noun

Chinese can omit an understood noun after a descriptive expression when the listener can recover it. The grammar illustrates this with different kinds of books. A short target phrase should therefore be read in context before concluding that the document word has disappeared by mistake.

However, a reference clear in one exchange may be unclear when forwarded with several attachments. In the Belarusian message, repeat the document type, version, or filename where necessary. The recipient should not have to infer which missing noun a shortened description stands for.

For the final review, identify the requested item and then attach each person, action, and version detail to it. Check that the message still requests the same document rather than assigning a new action. Traditional characters are the selected writing form; the grammatical task remains preserving the relationships inside the description.
