Bashkir possession and respectful Yoruba reference

An owner can remain neutral about gender

Bashkir ул does not distinguish he from she. Yoruba also has third-person references that do not require that English-style gender split. Translating a source statement about somebody’s possession therefore need not involve inventing the owner’s sex.

The University of Texas possessive lesson lists “tòhun” with a his-or-hers reading. Its first-person “tèmi”, mine, likewise identifies an owner without dividing speakers into male and female forms. These examples show a target distinction about ownership, not a requirement to add gender.

What remains essential is the antecedent. If a Bashkir paragraph mentions two people, a neutral reference can still be ambiguous in Yoruba. Find which person the source identifies as the owner before choosing a target phrase; gender neutrality does not settle who is meant.

A possessive ending may become a separate target expression

Bashkir often puts possessive information on a noun through an ending. Yoruba can express possession through separate pronoun material and can use possessive forms when the item is not repeated. The target need not retain the source’s written compactness.

The Texas lesson distinguishes ordinary noun phrases from emphatic possessive expressions. For a Bashkir reply saying that an object is mine, identify whether the source names the object or refers back to one already discussed. An isolated dictionary word for my is not necessarily the complete target answer.

This is useful in a lost-property exchange. The person handing over a bag, the person owning it and the person receiving the reply can be different participants. Trace those roles independently rather than treating every second-person or third-person expression as referring to the nearest name.

Respect can use a form that also serves plurality

Bashkir һеҙ can address one person respectfully as well as several people. The Yoruba greeting lesson likewise shows honorific address associated with plural-pronoun resources. This does not mean a courteous source statement should automatically become a report about several people.

First identify the actual number of recipients. Then preserve the relationship expressed by the source. A Bashkir greeting to one older relative and a greeting to an entire family can require different interpretation even when a respectful expression appears in both.

The target greeting may also depend on the time or activity. The lesson’s “kú” constructions are not a single greeting interchangeable in every situation. A source expression said to somebody working and a source good-night leave-taking should be understood as distinct acts before selecting Yoruba wording.

Tone and vowel letters belong to the copied result

Yoruba marks tone and has vowel letters with underdots. Bashkir Cyrillic supplies neither an equivalent guide to Yoruba lexical tone nor permission to flatten target spelling into unmarked Latin text.

The accent in tèmi is part of the teaching form, not a decorative replacement for a Bashkir stress mark. Copy the translated expression with its actual distinctions, including any underdotted letters elsewhere in the sentence.

After copying, read the whole message for the owner and the recipient. Preserving every accent cannot correct a sentence that assigns the object to the wrong person, while correct participant roles do not justify damaging the written target form.
