Bashkir to Swedish: whose tickets are being returned?

A possessive can point back to the person acting

A Bashkir possessive suffix can identify a third-person owner without distinguishing his from her. Swedish adds another important choice: whether a possessive refers back to the subject of its own clause. The language institute’s guidance describes sin, sitt, and sina for that basic relationship, contrasting them with personal possessives referring elsewhere.

Imagine a Bashkir message reporting that a colleague returned someone’s tickets. Before translating, establish whether they were the colleague’s own tickets or another person’s. The difference affects Swedish reference, even if everybody in the original conversation already knew which booking was involved.

Naming the owner in the source can be more useful than guessing a Swedish pronoun. If two people appear in the update, attach the name to the tickets explicitly. Do not choose a possessive merely because the nearest preceding name belongs to the intended owner; the grammatical relationship inside the clause matters.

An embedded report creates a new reference point

A sentence beginning with someone said that contains more than one clause. In the Swedish institute’s example, a personal possessive in the embedded clause refers to the speaker named in the outer clause, while the reflexive alternative points to the embedded clause’s subject. This is a basic pattern, with more complex constructions requiring additional care.

For a Bashkir report involving a passenger, an assistant, and a booking agent, decide who said what and who handled the tickets. Splitting a crowded source sentence into two named statements can preserve those relationships. It also prevents a short possessive expression from doing the work of an entire explanation.

Keep direct quotations distinct from your own report. If the passenger’s original words use my tickets, changing them into an indirect report changes the reference problem. Preserve whether the translated message is a quotation or a summary instead of silently switching between the two.

The Swedish verb does not identify the subject by person

Bashkir finite verbs can mark person and number. Modern Swedish finite verbs do not agree with the subject in those categories. A Bashkir update that relies on its verb ending may therefore need an explicit Swedish pronoun or name to make the actor clear.

Check who returned the tickets separately from who owns them. A target sentence can contain the expected past-tense verb yet still identify the wrong participant. When a response moves from speaking for yourself to reporting a colleague’s action, revise the whole source statement rather than replacing a name in an old translation.

Keep agreement separate from ownership

Swedish noun phrases also distinguish number and definiteness, and adjectives agree with nouns. Those changes describe the tickets or other objects; they do not independently establish their owner. Do not infer a person’s identity from the appearance of an adjective or noun ending.

Before sending the result, trace the actor and owner through each clause. If there is still room for two interpretations, repeat the owner’s name in the Bashkir message and translate again. Save the complete resolved exchange, since an isolated Swedish possessive cannot show which participant its original clause was about.
