Bashkir to Norwegian: ownership changes both the possessive and the noun form

My does not have one Norwegian shape

Bashkir expresses personal possession through a noun suffix, whereas Norwegian possessive expressions follow the possessed noun’s grammatical properties. Before translating a compact source form, identify both the owner and the target noun rather than remember one Norwegian word meaning my.

NTNU contrasts faren min, mora mi, and huset mitt for my father, my mother, and my house. The owner remains the same speaker. The changing possessive follows the target noun’s gender rather than the speaker’s sex, so it must not be read as a change of personal identity.

The Bashkir manual’s ata and atam distinguish father and my father in transcription. A Norwegian translation needs that owner relationship, but its realization depends on the actual target phrase. A source suffix cannot be replaced by an invariant possessive placed anywhere near the translated noun.

The possessive can move, but the noun changes with it

NTNU gives faren min and min far as alternative possessive arrangements. The noun is definite in the first pattern and indefinite in the second. A translated Bashkir phrase should use one coherent Norwegian pattern rather than combine the noun form from one with the placement from the other.

Plural possession needs separate attention. Norwegian mine is used with plural possessed nouns in the teaching account, while hans and hennes are invariant possessives. Bashkir book-related number and ownership may be packed into one form, but the target should preserve how many items are owned independently of who owns them.

For a message about a relative’s books, distinguish the owner from the family noun and from the items. A correct Norwegian possessive ending may agree with the books without identifying the right owner. The relationship must remain clear across the whole phrase, not merely at its final word.

The time relationship can change the conjunction

Poppe distinguishes a Bashkir gerund glossed “having done” or “as soon as” from a separate form meaning “before doing.” These compact source constructions already specify an ordering between events. A Norwegian temporal clause must retain that ordering before the choice between da for a bounded past occasion and når for repeated or future occasions can be assessed.

The source’s “as soon as he took” illustration makes taking precede the following event; the separate “before taking” construction reverses that relation. For an ownership or handover message, losing this distinction could change whether an instruction applies before an item is collected or after collection. Norwegian da or når alone should not be assumed to preserve the source’s more specific sequencing.

NTNU also contrasts a single past period with repeated past homecomings when explaining da and når. If the Bashkir sequencing construction occurs in a recurring routine, preserve both facts: which event comes first and whether the sequence recurs. A single conjunction glossed “when” cannot be selected without interpreting those source meanings. The ownership wording elsewhere in the sentence does not settle that temporal decision.
