Bashkir to Lower Sorbian: preserve the pair, the purpose, and the language variety
A plural source can refer to exactly two
Bashkir noun morphology distinguishes singular and plural, with plural suffix variants following the stem. Lower Sorbian actively uses a dual category in addition to singular and plural. A translation about two participants therefore needs the actual count before the target number forms are chosen.
The Bashkir contrast kitap and kitaptar, book and books, illustrates the source’s ordinary number marking. If a fuller phrase establishes that two books are meant, Lower Sorbian can require a number distinction that the source plural suffix does not independently express. Do not interpret the suffix as a complete instruction for target agreement.
The same problem affects references to people. A source we can mean a speaker and one companion or a larger group. For a translated meeting arrangement, recover that group from the message rather than assign one Lower Sorbian plural expression to every first-person plural source form.
Movement can introduce a special action form
The Lower Sorbian documentation project identifies the supine as a special nonfinite form commonly used after movement verbs. This matters when a Bashkir message combines going somewhere with the action intended there. A destination and a purpose are related, but they are not the same piece of meaning.
Bashkir case suffixes can identify a destination while verbal morphology expresses an action or intention. In Lower Sorbian, decide whether the source says someone is moving in order to perform an activity, simply names an activity, or reports its occurrence. An automatically inserted dictionary infinitive may not form the target construction needed after motion.
Lower Sorbian also retains the Slavic aspect distinction. The target verb must represent the intended action appropriately, rather than match only the source’s apparent tense. Going to do something does not assert that the action has already been completed, and a target perfective choice should not accidentally imply a completion absent from the message.
Contact with German does not make German the target
The documentation project describes substantial German contact, including adapted loanwords and code-switching in recorded speech. A German-looking element in an authentic Lower Sorbian passage is not automatically evidence of a mistranslation. It needs to be interpreted in the actual linguistic construction.
Conversely, a Bashkir translation request for Lower Sorbian should not simply produce German because many community members are bilingual. Lower Sorbian has its own inflection and established vocabulary. The target language choice remains meaningful even when a German expression would also be understood by a particular recipient.
For a Bashkir note about two people going somewhere to collect items, check the dual reference, the movement-plus-purpose construction, and the actual Lower Sorbian wording. Ownership must survive too: Poppe’s ata and atam show that an attached source element can carry a relationship equivalent to my. These checks follow the source information across different target structures rather than treat familiar-looking borrowings or suffixes as proof that the intended message has been preserved.
