Bashkir to Lithuanian: shared case marking still needs a new noun phrase

A case name does not identify one target ending

Bashkir uses noun endings to express relationships such as destination, location, and source. Lithuanian also has a rich case system, but its constructions determine which target form is appropriate. Translating the source means preserving the relationship, not assigning an invariant Lithuanian replacement to each suffix.

Poppe’s transcription distinguishes at, horse, from atqa, to the horse, and attan, from the horse. The source endings encode different directions or relations. A Lithuanian phrase should retain that difference through the construction required by its predicate rather than use one general place-related form.

The Lithuanian grammatical documentation describes case agreement extending to modifiers and relevant participles. A correct target noun ending is therefore not the entire task. The words accompanying the noun must form a coherent phrase, especially when a Bashkir source combines possession, quantity, and case compactly.

The target noun introduces gender agreement

Lithuanian nouns have masculine or feminine grammatical gender. Bashkir possessive forms do not themselves distinguish the sex of a third-person owner, and the target’s grammatical gender should not be treated as biographical information about that owner. Keep noun class and personal identity separate.

For a Bashkir description of an item, choose the Lithuanian noun first, then the appropriate agreeing description. A feminine target adjective does not automatically mean the source owner was female. Its form can be controlled by the thing described.

Number needs its own check as well. Lithuanian mainly distinguishes singular and plural, while dual forms survive in some dialects according to the documentation. Do not import a dual pattern into every standard target phrase merely because a source specifies exactly two items; use the form appropriate to the target variety and construction.

A compact predicate may become a different clause

Bashkir nominal forms can include predication after number, possession, and case. Lithuanian uses būti in many nonverbal constructions and also allows nominal predicates without an overt copula. A target sentence need not contain one independently translated word for every source predicate suffix.

The same care applies to indefinite expressions. The Lithuanian examples kas nors and bet kas distinguish something from anything in the grammatical documentation. A Bashkir request for an unspecified item should not accidentally become a statement allowing absolutely any item. The target phrase must match the source’s intended range of choice.

For a Bashkir direction or handover message in Lithuanian, check the intended relation to each noun, the agreement inside its phrase, and the specificity of any indefinite reference. These details are independent of how familiar the two languages’ case labels look. Correctly naming the object cannot establish whether it is being approached, left behind, owned by someone, or selected from an unrestricted set.
