Bashkir to Northern Kurdish: ownership and past actions use different participant forms

My book can change when I am also the actor

Bashkir marks possession on the noun, with personal endings identifying an owner. Northern Kurdish, or Kurmanji, uses construct phrases and distinguishes ordinary possession from reflexive possession in relevant clauses. A source possessive suffix therefore needs to be interpreted in relation to the whole sentence.

Thackston contrasts kitêba min, my book, with kitêba xwe when the owner is the subject of the clause. This distinction matters for a Bashkir message about someone seeing or collecting their own belongings. The target should identify whether the owner is the person acting rather than select a pronoun from a standalone possession table.

Bashkir ata and atam distinguish father and my father in the manual’s transcription. A Northern Kurdish family phrase must preserve that ownership, but its form also depends on the target construction. The source’s attached first-person element is not a ready-made instruction to use the same target possessive expression in every sentence.

Past transitive clauses can rearrange the grammatical roles

Kurmanji past transitive constructions use an ergative pattern described by Thackston. The distribution of direct and oblique personal forms differs from ordinary present-tense constructions. A Bashkir account of an earlier action must be formed through that target pattern rather than a present sentence with a past-looking word added.

The grammar’s Min tu dîtî means I saw you. A reader who recognizes min only from a possessive phrase could misidentify the actor. The form’s job comes from the clause. Recover who saw whom from the Bashkir source before selecting Kurmanji participant forms.

This is particularly useful for messages about giving, finding, or returning items. The target may contain familiar personal forms in positions that do not match an English or Bashkir gloss word by word. Compare the completed event’s actor and affected object rather than infer roles from one recognized pronoun.

Northern Kurdish is a substantive language choice

The kmr target is Northern Kurdish, not an interchangeable label for every Kurdish variety. Its grammar includes gender and case distinctions that are not identical to Sorani’s system. A target expression should be checked as Kurmanji rather than accepted because it resembles another Kurdish translation.

The Latin spelling also carries meaningful distinctions, including the circumflex in kitêba. Do not strip such marks merely because the source uses Cyrillic or because an unaccented form is easier to type. The target should preserve its established word forms while keeping names identifiable.

For a Bashkir message about returning one’s own book after finding it, check the reflexive possession, the past transitive participant pattern, and the actual Northern Kurdish wording separately. These are independent requirements. A correct noun root cannot establish ownership, and a correct personal form cannot establish its role outside the clause that contains it. Reading those relationships together preserves the event the source actually describes.
