Bashkir to Central Kurdish: identify what each ending contributes

A definite object is not just a book word with extra letters

Bashkir китап can name a book or function as an indefinite object, while китапты marks a definite direct object in the construction described by Poppe. A Central Kurdish translation must preserve which book is intended, but the target does not express that information through the same case ending.

Sina Ahmadi’s description lists Sorani kitêbeke as a definite book expression and -êk as an indefinite singular marker. These Latin forms explain the morphology of the Central Kurdish target; they are not a request to replace the selected Kurdish script with transliteration. Read the whole source noun phrase before choosing the target’s definiteness pattern.

For a borrowing message, a book already identified by the speaker and an unspecified book are different requests. If the Bashkir object is definite, do not discard that information because the target dictionary gives only a bare noun. Equally, a visible source ending may identify a grammatical role as well as definiteness, so preserving the target article pattern alone does not establish who gives or receives the book.

The noun and its description form one target construction

Bashkir places a descriptive attribute before its noun. Poppe’s account contrasts a descriptive phrase with a complete predicate, showing that rearrangement can change what the words are doing. Sorani descriptions use their own linking constructions rather than copying the source sequence.

Ahmadi contrasts gułî ciwan, beautiful flower, with gułêkî ciwan, a beautiful flower, and gułe ciwaneke, the beautiful flower. The linking and determining material belongs to the construction. Appending one fixed target ending to every translated Bashkir noun would miss the way the description interacts with the target phrase.

This matters when the source singles out an object by a quality. A message about the large book must not become a general statement that a book is large. Establish whether the Bashkir words identify which object to take or assert a fact about it; then build the corresponding Central Kurdish phrase or sentence.

A suffix near the noun may identify an event participant

Bashkir expresses person through pronouns and verbal endings and can mark a possessor on a noun. Central Kurdish also uses attached pronominal material, but its distribution cannot be read as the same source suffix sequence. Ahmadi’s examples show participant clitics occurring on different hosts in a clause.

Before deciding that a target ending means an owner, recover the complete source event: who acts, what item is involved and who receives it. A clitic beside the book noun may participate in a larger verbal construction. Judging it only by proximity can misidentify the recipient as an owner.

The selected target is Central Kurdish, commonly described here as Sorani. Keep that choice while checking the grammar. Familiarity with a form from another Kurdish variety does not provide a direct replacement for a Bashkir case or person ending. The useful test is whether the final clause preserves the intended item, its description and every participant’s role.
