Bashkir to Kashmiri: preserve the speaker while rebuilding the clause
First person can still require a gender choice
Bashkir мин identifies the speaker, while the verbal construction supplies person and time. Those forms do not divide the speaker into the masculine and feminine agreement choices found in Kashmiri. Translating a short first-person update may therefore require information from the surrounding exchange.
The Surrey Kashmiri report lists chus para:n and chas para:n as masculine and feminine first-person progressive-present forms for reading. These are scholarly transliterations used here to explain the contrast. They are not two spelling styles for the same unchanging form. The distinction follows the speaker of the reported words.
If someone forwards a Bashkir message written by another person, the original speaker remains the person represented by a direct quotation. A Kashmiri form selected from the forwarder’s identity could change that voice. Establish whether the target is a quotation or a new third-person report before choosing agreement.
Do not leave the finite verb at the source’s usual endpoint
Bashkir normally places its verbal predicate after its complements, although Poppe records other arrangements for emphasis. Kashmiri is described by Omkar Koul as a verb-second language, with important construction-specific exceptions. A translation cannot reliably keep the Bashkir sequence and substitute Kashmiri vocabulary one word at a time.
Verb-second concerns the position after an initial constituent, not necessarily after the first written word. A multiword time or place phrase can occupy that initial position. Identify the complete opening phrase before judging where the finite target verb belongs.
This matters when a Bashkir speaker fronts a location to contrast it with another place. The target should retain that contrast without treating the entire location phrase as several separate clause positions. Preserve what is being highlighted, then arrange the Kashmiri construction. A final verb that was natural in the source is not automatically natural in the target.
The object can affect the target agreement too
Bashkir marks a definite direct object through its case morphology. Kashmiri agreement patterns also depend on the verbal construction: the Surrey account distinguishes progressive constructions agreeing with the subject from other transitive patterns involving object gender and number. The same source participant may therefore not control agreement in every target tense.
For a report about reading a particular book, recover three separate facts from the Bashkir: who reads, which book is involved, and when or how the event is presented. Then check the Kashmiri construction as a whole. Matching an ending to the speaker in every sentence can fail when the target pattern instead responds to the object.
The source’s personal pronoun ул also remains neutral between a man and a woman. Where Kashmiri agreement requires a distinction, use the actual referent established in the conversation. Neither a default masculine guess nor a copied English gloss resolves the linguistic question. Clause order, event interpretation and participant agreement need to describe the same source situation.
