Bashkir to Irish: keeping ownership clear when the beginning of a word changes
Look beyond the separate word for the owner
Bashkir expresses possession with suffixes on the possessed noun. Its morphology reference gives китабы as his or her book, without distinguishing the owner’s gender in that form. Irish can require a distinction that this short Bashkir phrase leaves open.
Irish possessive a can mean his, her, or their. Its effect on the following word helps distinguish those uses: his causes lenition, her leaves a following consonant unlenited and adds h before a vowel, and their causes eclipsis where applicable. The initial letters of the next word can therefore carry information about ownership.
Do not decide that two Irish possession phrases mean the same thing merely because both begin with a. Equally, do not replace a changed initial consonant with the dictionary headword as a spelling correction. The difference may be exactly what identifies the intended owner.
Supply the owner when Bashkir leaves it unresolved
For a message about returning a borrowed item, identify the owner by name or role if the surrounding Bashkir conversation does not establish them. The translator should not have to infer a gender from a profession or guess which of two people an earlier possession suffix refers to.
Suppose a teacher lends an item to a parent, who then leaves it with another family member. Ownership, current custody, and permission to collect are different relationships. Keep those roles separate in the source. An Irish possessive may describe the owner correctly while the instruction still sends the collector to the wrong person.
If a singular owner changes to several owners, translate the entire possession phrase again. The separate possessive word may still look like a, but its grammatical effect can change. A revision that only replaces a person’s name may leave the noun’s beginning expressing the previous relationship.
The same short Irish form can have another job
The dictionary also records a in constructions with a verbal noun, including uses referring to a pronominal object. Not every a before an action means that somebody owns a thing. Read the whole construction before assigning an ownership interpretation.
For a Bashkir instruction involving an item and an action, distinguish the item’s owner from the person receiving or performing the action. A note about sending somebody to school is a different structure from a label identifying somebody’s school materials. The surrounding words establish which relationship the Irish expresses.
When reviewing a saved translation, keep the action phrase intact rather than extracting a small word and reusing it as a universal equivalent of a Bashkir suffix. Initial changes belong to a particular grammatical environment, not to a permanent alternative spelling of every noun or verb.
Check spelling together with reference
Preserve Irish accents and initial changes when copying the result. First establish whose item is meant, then identify who must act on it. If either role changes, translate the affected clause again. This checks the actual handover while retaining the grammatical distinctions that a Bashkir possession form may not state explicitly.
