Bashkir to Fijian: saying who food belongs to and who will consume it

A Bashkir possessive suffix leaves a Fijian choice open

Bashkir can mark an owner with a suffix on the possessed noun. The Academy of Sciences morphology reference illustrates this through forms of китап, book, including китабым, my book. Such a form identifies possession without using the Fijian distinction between different kinds of possessive relationship.

Standard Fijian has possessive classifiers conventionally described as food/passive, drink, and general. Their selection concerns the relationship between the person and the item, not simply whether the dictionary labels the noun as a food. Translating a Bashkir expression meaning my mango may therefore require knowing what the speaker intends to do with that mango.

For a food order, make clear whether an item is the person’s portion to consume, stock that they own, or something they are bringing for somebody else. Those are different relationships even when Bashkir expresses each through a familiar possession pattern.

Separate the customer, purchaser, and intended eater

A person paying for a meal is not necessarily the person who will eat it. Before translating a Bashkir catering message, identify who placed the order and which guests should receive each portion. A bare possessive such as our food may not supply those roles clearly enough.

Suppose a shop owner is describing fruit reserved for sale rather than fruit set aside for their own lunch. Keep that purpose explicit in Bashkir. Fijian possessive wording should not be selected solely because fruit is edible; ownership and intended consumption can point to different constructions.

Likewise, distinguish a drink prepared for a guest from a bottle that the guest is carrying as a gift. Name the intended recipient when it changes between sentences. Reusing a short possessive phrase from the previous sentence can preserve the owner while losing the intended use.

Research on Oceanic possession discusses Fijian examples in which the same fruit noun occurs with different classifiers. This is a useful warning against turning a learning label such as food classifier into a rigid rule for every occurrence of that noun.

Number and ownership answer different questions

Bashkir noun morphology distinguishes number from the person and number of the possessor. A form identifying our possession does not by itself establish how many portions are needed. State the quantity independently when translating an order for a group.

For example, two people sharing one container require different preparation from two people each receiving a container. Write that distinction into the Bashkir request rather than expecting the possessive to communicate it. Keep individual dietary choices attached to the person and portion they concern.

When reviewing the Fijian result, check who owns or provides the item, who is meant to consume it, and how much should be supplied. If one of those facts changes, translate the relevant phrase again. Swapping only the food noun can leave the old possessive relationship in place, producing a fluent label for a different arrangement.
