Bashkir to Croatian: keep a person’s own possession separate from someone else’s

Find the owner before choosing a Croatian possessive

Bashkir can identify an owner through a possessive suffix, a preceding possessive phrase or both. Its ordinary third-person pronoun ул does not distinguish a man from a woman. Croatian may require a more specific owner form, but it also asks a different question: is that owner the subject of this clause?

The Croatian school grammar gives Lucija čita svoju knjigu for Lucija reading her own book. Lucija čita njezinu knjigu instead identifies a book belonging to another female person. Both sentences contain Lucija, reading and a book. The possessive choice determines which woman owns that book.

When translating a Bashkir account about returning or borrowing something, resolve the owner from the source suffix and the surrounding conversation. Do not choose njezin merely because an English explanation says her. That English word can cover the subject’s own possession and another woman’s possession, while the Croatian construction distinguishes them.

Svoj also applies when the subject is I or you

The subject-related possessive is not limited to a third-person story. The same reference gives Ja imam svoju sobu, I have my own room, and Ti imaš svoju sobu, you have your own room. The possessive form still follows the relation to the subject, even though the subject’s person changes.

Bashkir possessive endings distinguish first, second and third person. A literal mapping from each source person ending to a different Croatian possessive stem would therefore miss this subject relationship. Preserve who owns the room, then select the target construction that says so.

This is particularly relevant when translating a list of personal instructions. A Bashkir sentence addressed to a reader may ask that reader to use their own item, while a later sentence refers to an item owned by someone else. Keeping the same Croatian possessive stem throughout would be convenient but could change the instructions. Review the owner in each clause, not just the first clause of the paragraph.

The possessed noun controls another set of changes

After identifying the owner, Croatian possessive forms also agree with the possessed noun. The grammar distinguishes masculine, feminine and neuter forms and their case patterns. Those endings do not report the owner’s biological sex. Bashkir does not provide a matching masculine-feminine-neuter agreement instruction for the translator to copy.

A Bashkir noun may also carry a case suffix after its possessive suffix. This adds the item’s role in the event to the information about its owner. In Croatian, selecting svoj or another owner form is only one part of preserving the phrase; its case and agreement must fit the target construction too.

For a message about an object at someone’s home, separate ownership of the object from ownership of the home. Two possessive relationships can coexist without having the same owner. Checking them independently helps prevent a polished Croatian sentence from silently making every mentioned item belong to the grammatical subject. The final sentence should preserve both the source relationships and the target’s distinction between one’s own possession and another person’s.
