Bangla to Upper Sorbian: negative meaning cannot be read by counting negatives

Identify whether the Bangla sentence is actually negative

The Bangla Universal Dependencies account identifies nā and nāi as negative particles. But an isolated familiar-looking particle is not enough to classify every utterance. Thakur and Ghosh’s comparative research includes Bangla confirmation questions with tai na and discusses constructions whose functions go beyond ordinary propositional negation.

A sender asking for confirmation that a colleague is going home is doing something different from asserting that the colleague is not going home. Preserve that speech act before deciding how to form the Upper Sorbian result. Otherwise a short question can become a false denial of the trip.

Upper Sorbian marks negation within its own verbal construction

Anstatt, Clasmeier, and Wölke describe Upper Sorbian negative marking on the finite verb and discuss its placement with auxiliaries in analytic forms. Their account also records special behavior for particular verbs. This is not a system in which an independent Bangla negative can simply be pasted at the same sentence position.

For a Bangla status update saying that a task has not been completed, retain both the negative meaning and the intended temporal interpretation. Assess the Upper Sorbian verbal construction as a whole. Moving a small negative element to imitate the source’s word order can interfere with the target pattern without improving fidelity.

Several negative forms can express one negative statement

The Upper Sorbian grammar describes negative pronouns together with verbal negation. It calls this double negation, but the construction does not automatically turn the statement positive. A negative reference to a person, thing, or time can coexist with a negative verb.

If a Bangla message says that nobody heard anything, the target may need more than one formally negative element to express that same denial. Do not remove one simply because two negatives would cancel in a logical formula. Natural-language grammar determines the interpretation of the construction; counting visible negative pieces is not an adequate translation check.

Object case is another constructional choice

The grammar notes that a genitive of negation is possible in Upper Sorbian but is not obligatory. This matters when a negative sentence refers to an object: the presence of a negative verb does not justify changing every target object automatically to the genitive.

The Bangla description distinguishes objective case marking from unmarked objects, especially with inanimate nouns. That source distinction likewise cannot supply a universal Upper Sorbian case ending. Identify the target verb and its actual negative construction rather than treating a Bangla noun form as a complete case-selection instruction.

For a practical review, determine what is denied, whether the source asks a question or makes an assertion, and which people or objects the denial concerns. Keep a preceding question when it explains a brief answer. A confirmation tag, a refusal, and an assertion that nobody acted can all contain familiar negative material while serving different purposes.

These points concern the Upper Sorbian standard described in the cited grammar. They should not be transferred automatically to Lower Sorbian. The translation direction requires the requested target’s own negation patterns while retaining the Bangla utterance’s actual force.
