Bangla to Tigrinya: the thing possessed controls part of the possession clause

Having a sister is not an ordinary action on a sister

A Bangla sentence describing possession needs a Tigrinya possession construction rather than an invented action verb translated as have. Maria Bulakh’s grammatical description explains predicative possession through a locative copula whose subject indexing relates to the possessed entity and whose object indexing relates to the possessor.

The documented example ʔanə ħafti ʔallatɨ-nni means I have a sister. The person possessing and the person possessed therefore occupy different grammatical roles from an ordinary actor and affected object. A Bangla family description must keep those roles clear when the speaker changes from describing a sibling to describing their own circumstances.

A negative possession has its own construction

Bulakh identifies a special negative possessive copula. A translator should not assume that denying possession consists of inserting the ordinary source negative beside an unchanged positive target form. The positive and negative claims must each be expressed through the relevant Tigrinya construction.

The grammar’s ʔanə səbəjti yəbɨlləjɨn means I have no wife. In a Bangla questionnaire response, having no spouse is a claim about the respondent’s circumstances; it should not become a negative description of an existing spouse. The difference affects meaning even if a translation contains the correct kinship noun and a recognisable negative element.

Ownership inside a noun phrase is another structure

The Bengali teaching grammar describes genitive endings that link a possessor to a following expression. Bulakh describes Tigrinya attributive possession through juxtaposition or a construction using nay, with ordering alternatives. This is a different task from building the predicative possession clause meaning somebody has something.

A Bangla phrase identifying a woman’s sister supplies a relation inside a noun phrase. A full statement that the woman has a sister asserts possession. The translation should not treat those two source expressions as interchangeable simply because they mention the same relatives. In the spoken constructions Bulakh discusses, additional head marking can relate to the owner, making the identity of that owner grammatically consequential.

The article can distinguish who the child is

Bulakh illustrates the same child noun with different gender-marked articles: ʔɨti k’olʕa for a boy and ʔɨta k’olʕa for a girl. A Bangla passage naming a child may thus require the translator to determine which target reference is supported, rather than treating the article as an optional decoration before a familiar noun.

The distinction becomes practical in a household description that mentions an adult’s child and later refers to a sibling. The Tigrinya choices must continue tracking each individual, while the possession construction separately tracks whose relative is meant. Neither the nearest noun nor the speaker’s own identity necessarily supplies the gender or ownership relation of the next reference. Resolve the family links in the Bangla account before selecting the target forms that express them.
