Bangla to Thai: possession and counting require different word arrangements

The owner follows rather than leads this noun phrase

Bangla genitive forms commonly precede the noun whose relationship they specify. The Bengali grammar explains endings such as -r and -er for building these forms. The Thai language profile hosted by Northern Illinois University illustrates possession through a noun followed by a possessor. Retaining the source sequence would therefore miss the documented target arrangement.

Its example luuk phom means my child. The important translation issue is not finding a separate equivalent for a Bangla genitive ending, but reconstructing the whole relation between the child and the speaker. A Bangla phrase identifying somebody’s child should keep that owner distinct from the child, even though their relative positions change in this Thai pattern.

Three children needs a counting construction

The profile gives luuk saam khon for three children, illustrating a noun, number and classifier sequence. A Bangla phrase containing a number cannot be translated by replacing the number and the noun while ignoring the remaining target component. The classifier participates in the Thai counting expression.

This matters when a message first identifies somebody’s children and then states how many will attend. Ownership and counting are separate relations: the owner is not the classifier, and the number is not evidence of a different possessor. Keeping those functions distinct helps prevent a translated family registration message from attaching a quantity to the wrong person or omitting part of the target count.

A past opportunity differs from an ability

Thai also makes the position of an element relevant to verbal interpretation. The profile distinguishes pre-verbal daay, associated with getting to do or having done something, from post-verbal daay, expressing ability. A Bangla sentence about an opportunity that occurred and one about what somebody can do should not collapse into an identical target sequence.

For instance, a source account that a visitor got to meet a teacher concerns an actual opportunity. A source statement that the visitor can meet the teacher concerns possibility or ability in its setting. Even where the Bangla passages mention the same visitor and teacher, the Thai construction must preserve that difference. Moving a target element is not merely a stylistic adjustment when its position changes this interpretation.

Time belongs to the event being described

The Thai profile explains that temporal words and pre-verbal elements contribute to event interpretation. Bangla finite forms should therefore be interpreted together with source time expressions rather than transferred as if each tense ending required a matching target suffix. An earlier event and a plan for tomorrow remain different propositions even when their participants are identical.

The profile’s pre-verbal ca marks a prospective will meaning. That makes it useful to distinguish a Bangla commitment about what will happen from a report of what already happened. In a message combining ownership, a participant count and a future arrangement, assign each element to its own relation: whose children, how many children, and which event is still ahead.
