Bangla to Slovenian: a two-person group needs more than a general we

A pair is a distinct grammatical count

Marc Greenberg’s Standard Slovene grammar distinguishes dual and plural personal reference. A Bangla statement about two people should therefore not automatically become an unrestricted target plural merely because an intermediary gloss says we.

The Bengali teaching grammar distinguishes ami and amra, but a Bangla group expression needs its actual membership read from the surrounding passage. Two named people may constitute the whole group, or they may be only part of a larger gathering already established. Determine the intended count for each event before choosing the Slovenian pronoun and agreement. A numeral near one noun does not determine the number of every later source group.

Miran and I does not mean the listener and I

Greenberg illustrates Midva z Miranom greva v Lendavo for the writer and Miran going to Lendava. The named companion helps resolve which two people the first-person dual includes. A Bangla source group should therefore not be assumed to contain the listener merely because it contains the speaker.

This matters when a writer reports a journey undertaken with a friend and later invites the reader to another activity. The two groups can have the same size but different members. The target needs to preserve which companion belongs to each source event. Correct dual agreement cannot repair a change from reporting an exclusive pair to apparently proposing a shared action with the reader.

Accompaniment can help identify the actual group

The Bengali grammar describes genitive forms before accompaniment expressions. A Bangla phrase saying with a named person supplies important information about the group, but its source case form does not establish a target ownership relationship.

Greenberg’s Slovenian example combines accompaniment wording with a verb agreeing with the actual number of the subject. A translation should interpret whether the named companion participates in the subject group rather than treat every accompanying person as an unrelated observer. The source action and group reference establish that relationship. The target construction must preserve both who accompanies whom and who performs the event.

A collective setting does not make every action collective

The source may move between one narrator’s personal action, an action by a pair and an action involving the whole group. A Slovenian translation should follow those changes instead of carrying a dual or plural choice through the entire paragraph.

This is particularly useful in a travel account that describes who booked, who travelled and who met at the destination. One person may perform the booking, two may travel and several may meet. The Bengali pronouns and named participants determine each event’s count. Slovenian dual agreement expresses a distinction that a broad plural gloss can leave implicit, so the source group must be reconstructed carefully before selecting the target clause. The reader should encounter the same set of people performing each action, even where the target grammar makes their number more explicit.
