Bangla to Serbian Latin: completed events, finite complements and case relationships

A Bangla aspect suffix may require a different Serbian verb

Bangla distinguishes simple, continuous and perfect morphology within its verbal structure. Serbian commonly uses aspect partners: related verbs viewing an activity as ongoing, repeated or general, or as a completed whole. Ronelle Alexander’s grammar illustrates jesti and pojesti, eat and consume on a particular completed occasion. The shared activity does not make the two Serbian verbs interchangeable in a Bangla progress update.

A Bangla continuous form reports an unfolding event without necessarily asserting its endpoint. Selecting a Serbian completed-event verb solely because the source refers to past time can add completion. Conversely, a source account that something was consumed in full should not lose that endpoint through a target expression merely naming the activity. Identify what the Bangla assertion says about the event before selecting the aspect partner.

The source nonfinite complement can become a person-marked clause

Bangla ability expressions use পারা with a nonfinite main verb. Serbian often uses da followed by a finite form where another language would use an infinitive. Alexander marks ne mogu da dođem as a Serbian construction for I cannot come. The target complement identifies the person through its verb, despite the source complement being nonfinite.

This becomes significant when the Bangla person wanting, permitting or requiring an action differs from the person carrying it out. Recover those participants before accepting a Serbian da clause. The presence of a source nonfinite form does not authorize choosing the same target person as the main clause in every situation. Preserve the source relationship between the intention and the intended actor.

An unmarked Bangla object can require Serbian case agreement

Bangla inanimate noun objects can retain a default form without an objective suffix. Serbian noun phrases distinguish case, and prepositions select the case of the phrase they introduce. A Bangla noun’s unchanged spelling therefore does not justify keeping the Serbian dictionary form throughout a message about that object.

Bangla’s objective form also covers functions corresponding to accusative and dative elsewhere. For a source transfer or assistance statement, identify actor, recipient and affected item before choosing the Serbian noun and pronoun forms. The target agreement belongs to those relationships. It is not recovered by translating one source ending as one permanent Serbian suffix.

Possessive agreement distinguishes the owner from the owned item

Serbian possessive expressions encode information about the possessor while also agreeing with the possessed noun. Universal Dependencies distinguishes those layers explicitly. A Bangla genitive expression should consequently be read for both relationships: who owns the thing, and which target noun names the thing. Replacing that noun can require changing its possessive modifier even while the owner remains the same.

The Latin spelling does not remove these grammatical requirements. Serbian future forms can also join an auxiliary to a verb, illustrated in the reference by pružiće, will provide. A compact target word may contain grammatical material that Bangla writes differently. Evaluate the future commitment and the participant rather than demanding a separate target word for each source component. Keeping Serbian Latin spelling intact includes its diacritics, as the attested form shows.
