Bangla to Rundi: noun class can control words beyond the noun itself

A plural subject can require a different verb prefix

Dimock, Bhattacharji, and Chatterjee show Bangla corresponding singular and plural pronouns sharing a person ending: আমি and আমরা can accompany the same first-person verb form. Rundi introduces another agreement relationship. Elizabeth Cox’s Kirundi course illustrates human singular and plural nouns with corresponding changes on the verb.

Its contrast includes arakora, he or she works, and barakora, they work. A Bangla source changing from one person to several cannot always be translated by altering the target noun alone. The Rundi predicate has to maintain agreement with the participant described. These examples concern the illustrated human class, rather than a universal prefix for every singular or plural noun.

Human meaning does not classify every human noun identically

Zorc and Nibagwire’s comparative grammar explains Rundi noun-class concord and warns that semantic descriptions of classes have exceptions. It gives umugabo and abagabo for man and men, while noting that not all human nouns occupy the same class group.

The Bangla course distinguishes human counting expressions from general classifiers. That source distinction can identify a human referent, but it does not supply the entire Rundi noun-class assignment. In a translation mentioning a teacher, a child, and a differently classified human noun, their meanings alone cannot justify copying one agreement pattern everywhere. The target’s class membership determines the associated forms.

An owner relationship can reverse the source phrase order

The comparative grammar describes a possession construction with the possessed noun first, followed by a linking marker agreeing with that noun, and then the possessor. Bangla genitive expressions, including the course’s আমার for my, place the owner expression before what is possessed.

This means that a Bangla expression naming a person’s possession is not transferred by retaining the same sequence of owner and object. The Rundi link also depends on the head noun’s class and number. The identity of the owner remains the same, but its position and the connecting morphology follow a different construction.

A short identity statement can need an overt target copula

Cox illustrates Umwigisha ni Andereya, identifying the teacher as Andrew. For a Bangla identity clause without an overt present copula, the Rundi ni can therefore carry a grammatical link that is unspoken in the source. The same lesson distinguishes si for denying an identity and warns against extending this pattern indiscriminately to location: the target choice depends on what the Bangla predicate says about the person.

The source’s lack of an overt word meaning is therefore does not instruct the target to omit ni. Conversely, a source location statement cannot be translated with that identity pattern merely because both express being in an English paraphrase. The University of Texas also notes that Bangla conjugated verbs can carry enough person information to stand without an explicit subject. That source compactness must be interpreted construction by construction: an unspoken subject and an unexpressed identity copula are different phenomena. A Rundi result can add a grammatical word while preserving exactly the source’s claim about who someone is.
