Bangla to European Portuguese: respectful address need not contain você
The source’s respectful pronoun has no universal one-word equivalent
For a Bangla request addressed to a teacher, the clearest source fact may be the respectful relationship conveyed by আপনি. A European Portuguese version can retain that relationship through an appropriate title such as o professor or a professora, rather than insist that a personal pronoun occupy the same visible position. Ciberdúvidas explicitly discusses teacher titles as alternatives where você would be unwelcome.
That Portuguese consultation also documents contradictory reactions to você: some speakers learn it as courteous address, while others perceive excessive familiarity or a downward social stance. The Bangla respectful function therefore does not establish a universal target choice. Identify the actual teacher and the address relationship; selecting a gendered title also requires knowing whom the Bangla message addresses, rather than deriving that information from the pronoun alone.
A name and a vocative do not select the same agreement
A separate Ciberdúvidas consultation distinguishes address using a name as a grammatical subject from directly calling a person by name while using familiar second-person grammar. Its contrast involves O Pedro vai? and Pedro, vais?: the same named listener appears in both, but the constructions differ.
This matters when a Bangla message names someone and also marks them respectfully. Merely inserting the name cannot decide the Portuguese verb form. The target must establish whether it is using a name-based third-person address construction or a familiar second-person form with a vocative. Bangla respect should not be lost through a verb ending that accidentally shifts the relationship.
A negative sentence can move a short object pronoun
Ciberdúvidas explains that European Portuguese commonly places clitic pronouns after a verb, while negative elements can require placement before it. For instance, telefonou-me expresses called me, whereas não me telefonou expresses did not call me. Negation changes more than adding não to an unchanged string.
The Bangla course distinguishes personal forms and their object relationships separately from the target’s clitic system. Consequently, a Bangla object such as me cannot be translated solely by choosing the correct Portuguese letters and retaining one fixed location. In a source statement followed by its denial, the same participant can remain the object while the Portuguese pronoun changes position.
A past action in progress is distributed across a construction
The University of Texas analyzes Bangla kha-cch-il-am, I was eating, into root, continuous aspect, past tense, and person. A European Portuguese rendering can express that ongoing past situation through eu estava a comer, with an auxiliary and an infinitive construction rather than a single corresponding source-shaped word.
Carla Marques’s explanation in Ciberdúvidas describes the European preference for estar a plus infinitive and the Brazilian preference for estar plus gerund, with similar ongoing meanings. This distinction does not mean that Portugal lacks gerunds. For the Bangla sentence, the relevant point is that a completed meal, a repeated habit, and eating underway at a past moment are different event descriptions. Choosing a locally familiar construction should preserve that source aspect, while the address choices elsewhere in the message preserve its separate interpersonal relationship.
