Bangla to traditional Mongolian: translating meaning comes before interpreting the vertical letters

Two shaped scripts do not organize vowels the same way

The University of Texas Bangla script guide describes consonant letters with an inherent vowel and dependent signs that replace it. In কি, the vowel sign appears visually before the consonant even though the vowel is pronounced after it. A Bangla reader already encounters a difference between visual placement and sound order.

Traditional Mongolian has a different organizing principle. Unicode describes a cursive script whose letters normally join along a vertical stem, with initial, medial, final, and isolated shapes. The target is therefore not Bangla syllable blocks turned sideways. Identifying a Mongolian letter requires its own script conventions rather than a search for corresponding Bangla vowel marks.

The vertical reading direction is part of the target

Unicode specifies traditional Mongolian’s normal direction as top to bottom, with successive columns running left to right. In a horizontal environment the standard also describes left-to-right presentation for embedded text. A horizontal display is consequently not evidence that the translated message should be reversed.

The Bangla script guide states that Bangla runs left to right, while acknowledging vowel signs placed around consonants. These source conventions cannot determine the target’s column order. A Bangla message pasted into a vertical Mongolian document needs both the translated language and the intended target layout; reversing characters to imitate a right-to-left script would alter the reading sequence instead of supplying vertical presentation.

A traditional spelling may preserve more than modern pronunciation

The Institute of the Estonian Language’s Mongolian romanization notes compare traditional-script forms with their modern Cyrillic counterparts. One illustration contrasts ayil, written ᠠᠶᠢᠯ, with Cyrillic айл. Another relates a separately written accusative expression mori_yi to морийг. The correspondence involves spelling conventions and grammatical endings, rather than a universal one-letter substitution table.

This matters if a Bangla user recognizes a Mongolian word from a Cyrillic dictionary but receives traditional-script output. Different apparent letter counts do not by themselves demonstrate a missing part of the source message. The reference’s transliterations describe the traditional spelling; they should not be mistaken for a Bangla pronunciation guide or used as replacements for the intended Mongolian characters.

Similar-looking letters can encode different words

Unicode notes that several traditional Mongolian letters share visible shapes in certain positions while remaining distinct encoded characters. Its example pairs include words meaning long and palace or camp with matching visual spellings. Thus copying a glyph that merely looks correct is not always sufficient to preserve the word.

The Bangla guide provides a useful contrast: its conjunct discussion shows how one visible cluster can combine multiple consonants. Neither system supports a rule equating visible shapes with a fixed number of sounds. For a Bangla-to-Mongolian translation, the target’s intended word and grammatical form must determine the character sequence. The source meaning cannot be recovered reliably by visually comparing Bangla clusters with Mongolian joined strokes.
