Bangla to Māori: which we, how many people and what kind of possession

A Bangla plural can require two separate Māori decisions

Bangla personal pronouns distinguish singular and plural, while its finite verbs do not cross-reference subject number. Māori pronouns require finer decisions: whether a group has exactly two members or three or more, and whether a first-person group includes the listener. The Bangla verb ending alone cannot supply those target distinctions.

Kupu contrasts māua, the speaker and one other person excluding the listener, with tāua, the speaker and listener together. Te Aka confirms the former’s use for a speaker paired with another person. For a Bangla message about a joint visit, establish whether the reader is the speaker’s companion or merely receives the report. Otherwise a correct activity and date can still assign the reader the wrong role.

A larger first-person group has another set of forms, including inclusive tātou. Do not choose a dual form merely because two people happen to be named earlier in the Bangla conversation. The group performing this particular activity might include others. Conversely, a source reference to a pair should not be broadened to an unspecified larger group for convenience.

The same number question applies beyond the speaker’s group

Māori also distinguishes two addressees from three or more, and two third-person participants from a larger group. A Bangla plural reference to people being discussed consequently requires recovering their number even when the source author did not repeat a numeral. This is particularly relevant to a message confirming whether a pair has arrived or describing a whole party’s arrival.

The target’s dual is a grammatical commitment about the participants. If the Bangla source leaves their number unresolved, inventing a pair adds information. Seek the antecedent within the supplied passage; a bare plural source expression cannot itself justify a target distinction that it does not encode.

Bangla genitive wording does not choose between Māori a and o

Bangla marks possession with genitive forms. Māori possessive expressions additionally distinguish a- and o-category relationships. Kupu explains that the relationship between the owner and the possessed thing determines the category, rather than one universal translation of my, your or their.

The teaching resource places such things as ordinary tools and food in the a category, while shelter, transport, clothing and body parts belong to the o category. These distinctions matter in a Bangla packing or travel message containing several possessions: the same owner can require different target possessive patterns across the list. Keeping one source genitive form does not license repeating one target possessive indiscriminately.

The category can depend on how something is related to its owner. Kupu’s example distinguishes an animal kept as a pet from one used for transport. A Bangla noun identifying the animal is therefore insufficient by itself; its role in the source situation can affect the Māori possessive construction. This is why replacing nouns inside an otherwise unchanged translated phrase can produce an unsuitable result.

Ownership and participation must remain separate

Te Aka’s possessive entries distinguish the size of the owning group from the number of things owned. A Bangla statement about two people’s belongings needs both relationships interpreted. Exactly two owners do not imply exactly two objects, and a plural collection does not identify how many people own it. Preserve those two counts independently when the target possessive and personal pronoun system makes them visible.
