Bangla to Malay: আমরা needs a decision about whether the listener belongs to the group

One source pronoun can lead to two different kinds of we

Dimock, Bhattacharji, and Chatterjee present Bangla আমরা as first-person plural. The pronoun identifies a group including the speaker, but its form alone does not specify whether the person listening also belongs to that group. Standard Malay makes that distinction through kami and kita.

Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka’s language-advice resource explains kita as including the speaker and those addressed, contrasting it with kami. Thus a Bangla announcement about what we will do can become a Malay statement about the speaker’s team alone, or about a shared activity involving the audience. The intended membership determines the pronoun, rather than the number of people alone.

An invitation and a report can have different group boundaries

If a Bangla speaker tells a visitor that we have already eaten, the source group may exclude that visitor. If the speaker proposes that we eat together, the listener may be included. Choosing the same Malay pronoun for both because both contain আমরা would flatten this difference.

This is distinct from recovering a missing Bangla subject. The University of Texas describes Bangla verbs as carrying person information and allowing a conjugated verb to stand as a clause. Even when first-person reference is recoverable from the verb, a translator may still need the surrounding conversation to establish whether the listener is included in a plural group.

Respectful reference is different from speaking to someone

The Bangla course distinguishes তিনি, respectful third-person reference, from আপনি, respectful address. DBP describes beliau as a third-person pronoun for a respected person. It can therefore be relevant when translating a source reference to someone being discussed, while it is not a mechanical replacement for every respectful source pronoun.

The practical distinction is visible in a message that first addresses a teacher and then mentions another respected person. Maintaining respectful language does not mean assigning both people the same grammatical role. A target third-person reference cannot by itself preserve a source second-person request, and the source honorific should not disappear merely because Malay uses a different inventory of forms.

Counting words also require target-specific selection

Dimock and colleagues distinguish Bangla human classifiers from more general counting forms. DBP likewise identifies Malay classifiers associated with particular types of nouns, illustrating ekor for animals, helai for cloth, and biji for fruit. Shared use of classifiers does not establish identical categories or identical placement.

For instance, tiga helai kain expresses three pieces of cloth, while tiga ekor kucing counts three cats. These Malay expressions cannot be assembled by replacing one Bangla general classifier with one fixed Malay word. The number remains three in both, but the counted noun selects a different target expression. Unlike the kami–kita distinction, this is not about who joins the speaker’s group; it is a separate grammatical choice about how the objects themselves are counted.
