Bangla to Italian: respectful address and family expressions need different agreement decisions
আপনি is a listener, even when Italian uses third-person grammar
Dimock, Bhattacharji, and Chatterjee distinguish Bangla আপনি, respectful you, from ordinary তুমি and intimate তুই. The distinction identifies how a speaker addresses someone. Italian can preserve respectful singular address through lei, which uses third-person grammatical forms while still referring to the listener.
That correspondence does not make every Bangla honorific pronoun Italian lei. Bangla তিনি refers respectfully to someone being discussed and can mean either he or she. A translation must first distinguish address from reference. Otherwise, an account about a respected man could accidentally become a sentence addressed to him, or acquire an unsupported feminine reference.
Formal lei does not settle a person’s gender
The Accademia della Crusca explains that masculine agreement with formal lei addressed to a man is fully acceptable; grammatical feminine agreement also exists, though it is now rare. Consequently, courteous Italian does not require treating a male addressee as female throughout a message.
The same consultation treats capitalizing courtesy pronouns as optional. A translation of আপনার can therefore be respectful without capital letters everywhere. More consequential choices involve maintaining the selected address relationship and distinguishing personal reference from possession. Italian third-person forms in a courteous exchange should be interpreted through who is speaking to whom, rather than mapped mechanically onto Bangla third-person reference.
My mother and my little sister do not take identical article patterns
The Bangla course supplies আমার for my. Italian must also choose the possessive form and determine whether an article belongs in that particular family expression. The Crusca consultation on kinship nouns gives ordinary singular mother and father expressions without the definite article when accompanied by a possessive.
Thus আমার মা can correspond to mia madre. But a diminutive kinship expression follows another pattern: la mia sorellina means my little sister. The article is not an independent translation of an extra Bangla word; it belongs to the Italian construction. Affectionate alternatives and regional usage introduce further variation, so a rule learned from madre should not be extended blindly to every family term.
A completed action may require agreement missing from the Bangla verb
The University of Texas analyzes Bangla verbal morphology in terms of aspect, tense, and person. Its ongoing-past example identifies a first-person speaker through the ending. Italian compound tenses distribute information across an auxiliary and a participle, and Treccani explains that an active compound with essere requires participle agreement with the subject.
Sono arrivato and sono arrivata both express I have arrived, with different speaker agreement. The Bangla identification of first person does not by itself choose the final vowel. This is a separate issue from the courtesy distinction above: even a message written entirely about oneself can require Italian gender information absent from the source verb. A translation of a past event must therefore resolve the relevant participant without confusing person agreement, respectful address, and participle agreement.
