Bangla to Latin-script Inuktitut: preserve word endings rather than copying source spacing

A destination can become part of the place name

Bangla uses both noun endings and following words to express relationships. Dimock, Bhattacharji, and Chatterjee illustrate locative forms with a suffix and genitive forms marking a possessor. Consequently, even before translation, a written Bangla noun may already contain information beyond its dictionary meaning.

Inuktut Tusaalanga’s South Qikiqtaaluk lesson makes a three-way distinction in location expressions: Kanatami means in Canada, Kanatamit means from Canada, and Kanatamut means to Canada. The last letters identify different relationships. A Bangla itinerary that distinguishes departure from arrival needs that distinction reproduced inside the Inuktitut forms, rather than an unchanged Latin place name followed by a transliterated Bangla word.

A consonant may change where the location ending begins

The same lesson explains that attaching these endings can alter the stem’s final consonant. Its Nunavut example becomes Nunavummut for motion toward Nunavut. This is a grammatical spelling change, not a correction of the proper name or a different destination.

For a Bangla writer accustomed to recognizing a place in its uninflected form, the change can obscure the boundary between name and ending. Keeping the original final consonant and merely adding the target suffix is not always the correct spelling. The lesson also records some speaker variation with long-vowel stems, so one mechanically concatenated form cannot represent every local convention.

Latin output still has an Inuktitut sound system

Tusaalanga’s ICI roman-orthography guide distinguishes the letters k and q and explains that j is pronounced like the English y sound. Those letters therefore should not be read as if they were a romanization scheme for Bangla. Selecting Latin-script Inuktitut changes the target writing system; it does not convert the Bangla message into Latin letters.

Doubled vowels and doubled consonants also carry pronunciation information. The guide treats long vowels and consonants as meaningful written distinctions, rather than decorative repetition. When a translated word contains a doubled sequence, shortening it to resemble a familiar Bangla transliteration can change the intended target form. The source’s syllable divisions do not determine where the Inuktitut word should be split.

The owner can be written inside the thing owned

The Bangla course presents আমার as my, placed before the possessed expression. Tusaalanga’s possession lesson instead illustrates illuga, my house, with ownership encoded by a noun ending. Its related forms distinguish one house belonging to two owners from one house belonging to a larger group.

The University of Texas also describes Bangla verbs as combining several grammatical components into one form. That offers a useful comparison, but it does not license copying Bangla component order into an Inuktitut noun. The target has its own system for owner number and possession number. In a Bangla message about our house, the source identifies a first-person group but may leave its exact size unstated; the target possessive construction can require that unresolved distinction even when the complete translation occupies fewer written words.
