Bangla to Hungarian: when the object changes the verb ending

Bangla person information is only part of the target decision

A Bangla finite verb contains person information about its subject. Hungarian verbs also mark person, but the target decision can involve the object as well. Kenesei, Vago and Fenyvesi distinguish Hungarian definite and indefinite conjugations: a definite third-person object selects the definite pattern, while an indefinite object or an intransitive use selects the other pattern. A Bangla source ending identifying the speaker therefore does not by itself determine the Hungarian ending.

The Hungarian grammar illustrates Olvasom, I am reading it, and Olvasod, you are reading it. Both contain information about a definite object even when that object is not separately written. Before translating a short Bangla reply about reading, establish whether it refers to an already identified item or merely the activity. Otherwise the target may imply a particular document or book that the source did not identify.

Do not infer Hungarian number from a Bangla finite ending

Bangla finite verbs do not cross-reference subject number, although personal pronouns distinguish singular and plural. Hungarian finite verbs inflect for number. The Bangla conjugation can therefore leave a choice unresolved that Hungarian grammar needs to make. Recover the group from the source pronoun or the surrounding exchange rather than treating one Bangla verb shape as proof of one participant.

This is a separate issue from object definiteness. A translation may correctly preserve who is speaking yet still choose an unsuitable object-conjugation pattern, or identify the object while incorrectly changing the number of speakers. Keeping the subject and the affected item as two distinct questions is especially useful when a Bangla response consists only of a conjugated verb.

Ability may be a suffix rather than a separate translated word

Bangla পারা, pārā, combines with a nonfinite main verb to express ability. Hungarian can use a potential suffix, -hat or -het, followed by the normal conjugation. Universal Dependencies gives Mehetek, I can or may go. The target can consequently express a Bangla multiword predicate inside one finite word; that difference in length is not a loss of meaning.

However, permission and practical ability are not automatically identical claims. When the Bangla passage concerns whether someone is allowed to act rather than whether the action is feasible, preserve that distinction in the Hungarian wording. A convenient potential form must be interpreted in its sentence, particularly when translating a question about access, opening hours or an available service.

Case markings must follow the Hungarian relationship

Bangla has an objective form that covers functions corresponding to accusative and dative in other languages, and inanimate noun objects can remain in their default form. Hungarian direct nominal objects take accusative marking. An apparently unmarked Bangla noun can thus acquire a target suffix without the translation adding a new participant or emphasis.

Hungarian also marks possession on nouns, including information about the possessor and the possessed item. Bangla genitive wording should be interpreted as an ownership relationship before those target forms are selected. The source’s separate possessive expression need not survive as a separate Hungarian word. What must survive is which person owns which item, including whether the source actually identifies one item or several.
