Bangla to Hebrew: gender and courtesy are different pieces of information

A polite Bangla pronoun does not identify gender

Hanne-Ruth Thompson’s Bangla grammar distinguishes familiar, intimate, and polite second-person forms, while explaining that personal pronouns do not distinguish gender. Those are separate facts. A courteous reference can tell the translator something about the relationship without identifying whether the person is a man or woman.

Hebrew agreement creates different requirements. The Hebrew Universal Dependencies description records masculine and feminine gender on pronouns and agreement in verbs and adjectives. A Bangla appointment message can therefore provide enough information about courtesy while leaving a target agreement choice unresolved. Supply the actual intended recipient or relevant context rather than treating politeness as a gender cue.

Check who the description belongs to

In a message from one person to another about a third person, the gender relevant to a Hebrew description may belong to the person discussed rather than the recipient. A respectful Bangla pronoun does not merge these participant roles. Identify the subject of each statement before evaluating the target adjective or verb.

For an introduction, distinguish the person writing, the person being introduced, and the person receiving the introduction. If the source names a professional role but does not make the referent clear, retain the name or clarify the relationship. A translation that consistently uses one gender can still be wrong if that agreement has been assigned to the wrong participant.

Number needs an independent check

The Bangla Universal Dependencies account distinguishes singular and plural pronouns but notes that finite verbs do not cross-reference subject number. Hebrew has number agreement in verbs and adjectives. A source verb by itself therefore cannot always provide the target’s singular-or-plural decision.

In a scheduling exchange, separate an invitation to one colleague from an invitation to several colleagues. Read an expressed source pronoun and earlier reference to the invitees before checking the Hebrew wording. Do not assume that a shared Bangla verb form makes those two invitations interchangeable in the target. The courtesy level of the invitation and its actual audience size must both survive.

Present-tense description is not a word-for-word copula exercise

The Bangla description allows present nominal or adjectival predication without an overt copula. The Hebrew account likewise describes nonverbal clauses and distinguishes their copular possibilities from past and future forms. This similarity does not remove Hebrew agreement requirements or establish one invariant equivalent of an omitted is.

Read a brief Bangla introduction as a complete meaning before reconstructing it in Hebrew: who is being identified, which attribute is asserted, and whether it concerns the present. A heading or label may have a different function from a full sentence in a message. Adding a separate target verb merely because an English paraphrase contains is can be an unreliable editing strategy.

For a final check, associate every Hebrew description with its intended person and actual number. Keep the Bangla source’s level of address as contextual information, but resolve target gender from evidence about the referent. If that evidence is unavailable, clarification is more faithful than silently inventing a gendered identity.
