Bangla to Dogri: translating meaning across scripts without importing pronunciation

Dogri words are more than Devanagari versions of Bangla words

Bangla and Dogri belong to the Indo-Aryan family, but a translation between them still needs Dogri vocabulary rather than a change of alphabet. Veena Gupta’s linguistic account identifies Dogri as a language with its own development and regional speech differences. A familiar-looking inherited word is evidence worth checking, not proof that a Bangla expression can be copied with new letters.

The CIIL–NCERT Dogri primer gives कताब for book and चन्न for moon. These are useful reference points when translating a Bangla caption naming an object: the target should name the object in Dogri, with the target spelling, rather than reproduce the sound of the source label. The primer is a literacy resource for Dogri itself, so its examples establish target words without implying that every Bangla phrase containing book or moon has a matching literal construction.

A written aspirated letter need not prescribe an aspirated Dogri sound

The Dogri primer explicitly warns teachers that several written consonants are not pronounced in their apparent letter-by-letter values. It describes position-dependent realizations and their effect on tone. Gupta likewise treats tone as part of Dogri’s sound system. A Bangla reader converting text into speech must therefore avoid assuming that a recognizable Devanagari consonant stands for the pronunciation suggested by a Bangla counterpart.

This distinction becomes concrete with घ, the letter heading under which the primer presents घड़ी, clock or watch. Retaining the target spelling is appropriate; inventing a Bangla-based phonetic reading from that spelling is a separate and potentially misleading operation. If a translation is accompanied by pronunciation help, Dogri audio or a Dogri phonological source should determine that help. The written translation and the pronunciation annotation have different jobs.

Read the source verb before choosing the Dogri expression

The University of Texas describes Bangla verbs as a sequence of root, aspect, tense and person material. Its example kha-cch-il-am means I was eating: it is a complete assertion, despite being a single conjugated verb. A Bangla-to-Dogri translation must preserve that asserted event and speaker, rather than treating the input as a dictionary entry for eating.

Bangla dictionary forms themselves can be verbal nouns. The same university resource distinguishes those citation forms from the roots used in finite conjugation. Consequently, a Bangla label naming an activity and a Bangla reply reporting an activity are different translation tasks. Shared language-family membership does not justify overlooking the source ending that tells which task is present.

Do not turn a light verb into an unintended extra action

Bangla also uses noun–verb and verb–verb combinations in which one component carries the central lexical meaning. Universal Dependencies illustrates শেষ করা, śeṣa karā, finish, literally end do. In a Bangla instruction about finishing a task, translating the two components as separate Dogri actions would distort the source. Identify the whole predicate before finding the target wording.

Other Bangla combinations use a finite go, take or give after a participle with reduced independent meaning. This is particularly relevant when the Dogri output appears to add travel or transfer: the source may describe the manner or completion of one event instead. The decision comes from the Bangla construction, not from how easily its individual roots resemble words in another Indo-Aryan language.
