Bangla to Chinese Simplified: answer the question with its own predicate

Yes depends on what the question asks

A short affirmative Bangla reply may be adequate in its source conversation, but a Mandarin translation often draws its short answer from the predicate of the preceding question. Oxford’s Chinese grammar database illustrates different replies to questions about being a teacher, being well and having eaten. One fixed target word cannot replace every source affirmative without regard to that predicate.

The contrast 是 and 不是 answers a question of identity expressed with 是. It does not supply a universal yes–no pair for every Bangla question. If a conversation changes from somebody’s occupation to whether they have eaten, the translated answer must change with the proposition being answered.

A completed meal has a different negative construction

Oxford distinguishes questions using 不 from questions about completed actions using 没 or 没有. A Bangla negative reply should therefore be interpreted for whether it denies an identity, rejects a proposed action or reports that a particular event has not occurred. These meanings do not all select an identical Mandarin negative.

The documented short answer 吃了 affirms having eaten. In a Bangla exchange about a meal, preserve whether the reply confirms completion rather than a general liking for food or a plan to eat later. A plausible food-related predicate is not enough; the answer must respond to the actual temporal and grammatical content of the question.

An alternative question asks for a selection

The Oxford database also distinguishes a choice between alternatives using 还是 from the affirmative–negative question patterns. A Bangla question asking whether somebody studies one language or another seeks a selection. Turning it into a question about whether they study at all changes the information requested.

This is particularly noticeable when a short source reply names only one alternative. The translated question and answer must remain aligned: a named language answers a language-choice question, whereas an affirmative predicate answers whether a particular proposition is true. Reconstruct the pair together when a source fragment has been pasted without repeated nouns.

An imminent event must not become a completed one

The particle 了 also participates in constructions describing an approaching event. Oxford illustrates 要…了 with an imminent arrival. A Bangla sentence about somebody being about to arrive therefore should not automatically become a report that they have arrived merely because its Mandarin construction contains this particle.

The Bengali teaching grammar treats finite verb forms as part of interpreting the source event. Read those forms together with expressions such as already, soon or a specified time before choosing the Mandarin construction. A question about whether a guest has arrived, an answer that the guest is about to arrive and a statement that the guest arrived earlier must remain three different messages. Their distinction affects what the recipient should expect now, even though each concerns the same guest and the same journey.
