Bangla to Armenian: question focus, respectful address and the auxiliary

A Bangla question particle becomes an Armenian punctuation decision

Bangla কি, ki, can introduce a yes-no question rather than mean what. Armenian does not require an interrogative word meaning what merely because that source particle is present. In Eastern Armenian, the question mark is attached above the stressed syllable of the word carrying the question’s emphasis. The target must convey what is being asked, including the focus, rather than preserve a separate Bangla particle as an extra content word.

Universal Dependencies illustrates ինչո՞ւ, why, with the Armenian question mark inside the written word. Dora Sakayan’s Eastern Armenian course further explains that moving interrogative emphasis between a participant, an activity and a language name can change what a speaker is questioning. A Bangla inquiry confirming who speaks a language should not quietly become an inquiry contrasting that language with another. The punctuation carries information that a final question mark alone may not express.

Keep respect separate from the number of addressees

Bangla conjugation includes honorific second- and third-person forms. Eastern Armenian has a respectful second-person pronoun Դուք, whose capital initial distinguishes the formal written form from the ordinary plural. It takes second-person plural verbal agreement even when addressing one person. A Bangla message addressed respectfully to one reader can therefore legitimately produce a plural-shaped Armenian verb without suddenly addressing a group.

Conversely, a Bangla honorific third-person ending refers respectfully to someone being discussed; it should not automatically turn that person into the Armenian addressee. Establish whether the source is speaking to the person or about the person. The distinction is essential in a request forwarded through an intermediary, where respectful reference and direct instructions may occur in adjacent clauses.

Bangla packs information into an ending that Armenian may distribute

The University of Texas analyzes Bangla kha-cch-il-am, I was eating, as root plus continuous, past and first-person material. Its person ending can make the verb a complete statement. Armenian uses an auxiliary with participles in several tense constructions, so a target phrase containing more than one verbal word need not describe more than one event. Read the Bangla temporal and participant information before choosing the Armenian construction.

Bangla’s present nominal and adjectival predicates can lack an overt copula. Eastern Armenian uses a form of եմ, be, with corresponding nonverbal predicates. Omitting every target word without a separate Bangla counterpart can consequently remove the Armenian predicate’s grammatical support. The source can be complete with fewer visible words than the translation needs.

Negation belongs to the target construction

Bangla না and নাই are negative particles. Eastern Armenian frequently uses the bound negative element չ- on a verb or auxiliary. A faithful translation can therefore express the source negative inside another written word rather than with a free-standing equivalent at the Bangla position. Determine which proposition is denied before assembling the Armenian negative construction.

This matters particularly with Bangla ability and necessity expressions. Bangla পারা combines with a nonfinite verb for ability, while হওয়া in another nonfinite construction can express having to act. Negating an obligation is not the same proposition as requiring someone not to act. Preserve the source relationship between negation and the modal meaning; an Armenian negative marker must not make the instruction stronger than the Bangla message.
