Azerbaijani routine and current events in Yucatec Maya
Present-time information does not settle event aspect
Azerbaijani predicates and context can distinguish a routine from an activity underway. Yucatec Maya needs its own aspectual construction rather than a target form selected solely because a source grammar labels the action present.
UADY illustrates habitual singing with kin k’aay and current singing with tin k’aay. The short marker before the singing root changes the interpretation. An Azerbaijani present-tense ending cannot be copied into that position or used as a universal instruction to select just one of these Maya patterns.
The Peace Corps course teaches Azerbaijani present predicates through a stem, a present marker and person endings. That source packaging combines information which the Maya construction distributes differently. First identify whether the source describes a recurring activity or one underway; then preserve the participant through the appropriate target person marking. Replacing the Azerbaijani ending with a Maya activity root would leave both decisions unresolved.
An ownership answer is not just an attached source ending
The Maya course gives “intia’al” for mine in an answer identifying ownership. This is a construction for an ownership claim, not a universal equivalent of every Azerbaijani first-person possessive ending.
If the source first names a document and then says it belongs to the writer, preserve that reply’s function. A phrase naming my document and a standalone answer meaning mine need not have identical target grammar even where the owner is unchanged.
Also distinguish the owner from the actor. An Azerbaijani source request can ask the listener to bring the writer’s item to a third person. Selecting a first-person possessive does not independently establish who should bring it or who receives it. Follow all three roles through the complete target sentence.
Apostrophes and vowel marks belong to the word
The INALI writing standard distinguishes several vowel types and glottalised consonants. The marks inside the examples are not quotation punctuation or an English-style possession apostrophe. They contribute to established Maya spelling.
Azerbaijani Latin writing has its own marked letters, but it does not provide a one-to-one sound guide for Maya vowel and glottal distinctions. Do not simplify a target word by deleting an apostrophe or accent merely to make it look familiar.
A pronunciation aid for an Azerbaijani reader would be a separate representation. It should not replace the target spelling in the message intended for a Maya reader. Copy the complete form after verifying its grammatical use.
Source person information must remain recoverable
Azerbaijani can identify person through its predicate endings even where an independent pronoun is omitted. Yucatec Maya uses its own person marking and predicate constructions. The source ending’s physical position does not determine where target person information belongs.
In a message switching from the writer’s routine to another person’s current performance, keep the change of participant explicit enough for the target reader. A repeated activity root does not establish that the same person continues acting.
For this direction, identify habitual versus current activity, the owner of any item and the actor of each event before checking the written forms. These decisions preserve Azerbaijani meaning while respecting Maya aspect, possession and orthography.
