Azerbaijani to Tongan: identify who is included and who is leaving
Biz does not say whether the listener belongs to the group
Azerbaijani biz means we, but does not itself distinguish a group including the listener from a group excluding that listener. Tongan makes that distinction in its pronoun system and also distinguishes two people from a larger group. A short Azerbaijani plan can therefore leave a target choice unresolved even when every individual source word is understood.
Consider the meaning of biz ikimiz, the two of us. It may refer to the speaker and the person listening, or to the speaker and someone else. POLLEX records separate Tongan inclusive and exclusive dual forms: kitaua and kimaua in its lexical notation. They identify different pairs of people, rather than different levels of politeness.
For an Azerbaijani appointment message, establish whether the addressee is being invited to participate or merely informed about another pair’s plans. A translation that makes the listener part of an exclusive source group changes who is expected to arrive. A translation that excludes the listener from an invitation can sound like a cancellation. Where the larger conversation identifies the participants, carry that information into the target choice.
A farewell follows the person who moves
Azerbaijani Sağ olun may serve as thanks or leave-taking according to the exchange. In Tongan, the appropriate farewell also depends on whether the person being addressed is leaving or staying. The intended social action needs to be recovered before a short courtesy expression is translated.
The Peace Corps lessons give ‘Alu ā to someone leaving while the speaker stays, and Nofo ā to someone staying while the speaker leaves, in informal use. These are not two decorative variants to alternate for variety. A visitor departing from a host and a host seeing off a visitor occupy opposite roles.
The same Azerbaijani wording can appear at the end of both conversations. Look at the preceding travel statement, such as a statement that the speaker is going, before choosing the target farewell. Respect in Azerbaijani siz adds another consideration; the informal examples above should not be treated as a complete account of Tongan formal address.
Keep the group decision separate from the courtesy decision
Azerbaijani verb endings can identify a plural speaker or listener without a separately written pronoun. That does not make the Tongan inclusive or exclusive distinction disappear. Read an omitted source subject from the complete verbal construction, then determine its membership from the conversation.
It is useful to check a meeting message in two passes: who will act, and how the speaker addresses the recipient. A respectful Azerbaijani request to one listener does not create a larger group; a warm invitation can still concern only two people. Tongan group membership and number should follow the participants rather than the tone.
Finally, preserve the written distinction in ā and the glottal-stop letter in ‘Alu. Azerbaijani letter contrasts likewise carry information, so familiar Roman shapes are no reason to remove target marks. A farewell whose roles are correct should remain readable in the target’s actual spelling.
