Azerbaijani past updates and Russian event boundaries

A source first-person past does not identify speaker sex

Azerbaijani first-person past statements identify the speaker through their own endings without choosing the Russian masculine-versus-feminine singular past form. A detached source update can therefore leave information open that one Russian sentence makes explicit.

Russian “я пришёл” and “я пришла” illustrate a male and female speaker saying that they arrived. The choice concerns the person speaking in that statement, not the sex of the recipient reading it.

If somebody forwards an Azerbaijani first-person message, preserve the original speaker’s perspective. Selecting agreement for the typist instead can produce a grammatically correct target sentence that represents the wrong speaker. Use the surrounding introduction rather than assuming that the operator always speaks personally.

Past time and completed result are different decisions

The Russian pair “печь” and “испечь” illustrates imperfective and perfective baking verbs in the grammatical reference. Aspect is a lexical distinction in Russian, with many related pairs but no universal operation that adds one prefix to every source verb.

Azerbaijani tense and event meaning should be read together. A source report that someone was baking at a particular time differs from a statement that they completed the baking. A past date alone does not select the Russian aspect.

This matters for a task update promising a finished result. Recognising the right activity word does not establish whether the target claims completion or merely describes work underway. Keep the source duration, endpoint and surrounding explanation attached to the event.

An identity statement may not need a present copula

Azerbaijani present occupation statements can contain person endings attached to nominal predicates. Russian often expresses present identity without an overt be form. The source ending should not be converted automatically into an independent target verb merely to match a literal gloss.

An introduction naming the writer’s profession is different from an arrival report or a past description of their job. The target clause type and timeline determine its construction. A form suitable for a present identity should not be copied unchanged into every past narrative.

The Russian reference also distinguishes case roles within predicates and noun phrases. A source noun’s Azerbaijani case label does not by itself select an identical Russian form. Identify actor, recipient and any occupation or property relationship before judging the ending.

Sex-neutral third-person reference still needs an antecedent

Azerbaijani o does not distinguish he from she. Russian ordinary personal reference can require a choice that the isolated source pronoun cannot settle. Use an established source name or role rather than accepting a target default as evidence about the person.

If two colleagues occur in the message, check which one arrived and which one completed the work. A clear grammatical gender ending is unhelpful if it refers to the wrong colleague.

For this direction, establish speaker perspective, event completion and the identity of each source participant. Those decisions preserve an Azerbaijani update while allowing Russian past agreement, aspect and case to make their own grammatical distinctions.
