Azerbaijani to Norwegian Bokmål: returning your own belongings or somebody else’s

Ownership is not one unchanged Norwegian ending

Azerbaijani can express possession through noun suffixes without a grammatical gender system. Norwegian Bokmål has noun gender, and possessive forms such as min, mi, mitt, and mine agree with the item possessed. The choice concerns the noun’s gender and number, rather than the gender of the person who owns it.

For example, huset mitt means ‘my house’, while bøkene mine means ‘my books’. The change does not identify a different owner. When adapting a translated return message from a key to several books, translate the complete noun phrase instead of keeping the first possessive form beside the replacement noun.

Bokmål can put the possessive after the noun, with the noun in definite form, or before it in a different construction. An Azerbaijani reader should not move a Norwegian possessive to the front simply because that order feels more familiar. The noun’s form belongs to the construction too.

The owner may be the subject of this particular clause

Norwegian sin, si, sitt, and sine are reflexive possessives used with a third-person subject when the possession belongs to that subject. They differ from hans, hennes, or deres referring to somebody else’s possession. That distinction can decide whose belongings a person is returning.

The reflexive form also agrees with the possessed noun. Sitt does not mean that the owner is a man, and si does not establish that the owner is a woman. Do not infer a person’s identity from the gender form of the item’s possessive.

In an Azerbaijani account involving two colleagues, specify whether the person collecting a bag is collecting their own bag or the other colleague’s. If the next sentence changes who is acting, check ownership again. The relevant subject is not necessarily the first person named in the paragraph.

There is also a limit: these reflexive possessives cannot simply be inserted into the subject noun phrase. A correction that changes who owns an item may require rebuilding the sentence rather than replacing every occurrence of an ordinary possessive with sin.

Keep the return condition attached to the right item

An Azerbaijani note may identify an item through a description such as the charger that does not work. Bokmål relative clauses have their own word order: the negative ikke comes before the finite verb. Do not rearrange the translated description into the Azerbaijani pattern or assume that a moved negative has changed the instruction into a prohibition.

Distinguish an item that must not be returned from an item that is being returned because it does not work. In the first case the negative limits the action; in the second it describes the item. Write that difference explicitly in the Azerbaijani source.

Before sending the Bokmål message, identify the collector, the owner, and the reason for return. If the item or owner changes, translate the affected sentence again. This keeps noun agreement, reflexive reference, and the negative description working together instead of leaving three individually plausible fragments with conflicting meanings.
