Azerbaijani to Latvian: possession and obligation can both use a dative person

An Azerbaijani possession construction needs its complete Latvian counterpart

Azerbaijani can express possession with a locative personal form and var, or with a genitive possessor plus a possessive noun and var. Məndə kitab var and mənim kitabım var both support possession readings, with differences in how the construction presents the possessor and the possession. The source should be read as a full construction rather than as separate dictionary words.

Man ir grāmata means I have a book in Latvian, with the possessor in the dative. For an Azerbaijani message about whether a document is available, preserve who has it and what the item is. Do not translate the source locative form as physical location by default if the complete phrase expresses possession. Conversely, an actual statement locating an object must remain a location statement rather than be converted into ownership merely because a personal reference appears nearby.

The same dative person can be responsible for a necessary action

Latvian also uses a dative person in its debitive construction expressing necessity. Man ir jālasa grāmata means I must read a book. Compared with the possession example, the added action construction changes what the statement asserts: having a book is different from being obliged to read it.

For an Azerbaijani work message, distinguish access to a document from a requirement to read it. A target phrase containing man and ir is not automatically complete merely because it resembles a familiar possession sentence. The jā- construction needs the appropriate action and participant. If the source assigns the task to the recipient, do not retain the first-person form from an earlier statement saying the writer has the document. Preserve the obligation’s actual bearer independently of who currently holds the item.

A source suffix chain can combine information that Latvian distributes

Azerbaijani can attach number, possession and case information to one noun in a regular sequence. Latvian distributes comparable relationships through case forms and clause constructions that need not resemble that sequence. Expanding a source word into more target words does not by itself add information; the question is whether each original relationship remains recoverable.

In an Azerbaijani exchange about a colleague’s documents, identify the owner, holder and person expected to read them separately. Those roles may coincide, but the source can also assign them to three different people. A respectful siz addresses the listener without proving that the listener owns the documents or bears every duty mentioned. Keep a definite quantity intact when the source changes from one document to several. Then read the Latvian possession and obligation clauses together: the same dative pattern can participate in different meanings because the rest of the construction differs. A matching personal form alone is not evidence that the translation preserved the original assertion.
