Azerbaijani to pIqaD Klingon: preserve time and the scope of not

An Azerbaijani tense ending cannot simply become a Klingon tense

Azerbaijani verb endings distinguish time and person. A short source verb may therefore report a past event without a separate yesterday or last week. Klingon does not mark tense through a corresponding set of past, present and future verb endings. A translation must preserve the time supplied by the Azerbaijani construction through context or an appropriate time expression.

The Klingon Language Institute illustrates jIqettaH as an ongoing running event whose time can be past, present or future. The suffix -taH concerns the action’s continuation. It cannot, by itself, replace the past information in an Azerbaijani report. If the surrounding conversation already establishes yesterday, that context can do work that an isolated translated sentence cannot.

For a saved phrase, this difference is practical. A sentence copied out of its original conversation may lose the time anchor that made it clear. Keep an explicit source time expression in the translation rather than treating it as redundant because the Azerbaijani verb also showed past time. The target may depend on precisely that expression.

Inability and choosing not to act must stay distinct

Azerbaijani separates doing an action, not doing it and being unable to do it through its verbal construction. These distinctions must survive before the target is rendered in pIqaD. A change of script cannot repair a grammatical translation that has collapsed refusal and inability.

Klingon places the negating suffix -be’ after the portion it negates. The KLI contrasts a construction meaning cannot speak with one meaning can refrain from speaking: vIjatlhlaHbe’ versus vIjatlhbe’laH. These Latin forms are explanatory readings of the grammatical contrast, not a replacement for the pIqaD output selected on this page.

An Azerbaijani speaker describing inability is reporting a limit; a speaker describing a choice to remain silent is reporting something different. Establish that source meaning before comparing the suffix order. A target sentence can contain the right root for speaking, the right ability marker and the right negative marker while still assigning the negative to the wrong part.

Treat pIqaD as the writing choice for the translated language

Microsoft distinguishes its Klingon Latin and Klingon pIqaD options. Selecting pIqaD requests that writing form; it does not ask for an Azerbaijani sentence displayed with unfamiliar symbols. Translate the participants, event and relationships into Klingon first, then retain the selected target representation.

Azerbaijani spelling gives each source word a definite sequence of letters. Klingon Latin explanations likewise use meaningful internal capitals and apostrophes. When comparing a pIqaD result with a Latin grammar reference, compare corresponding linguistic forms rather than assuming that similar visual length implies similar meaning. The KLI describes pIqaD character conventions separately from Okrand’s Latin orthography. A reader studying the result may benefit from a Latin reading alongside it, but that reading should remain clearly separate from the selected-script translation.
