Azerbaijani person endings and Kashmiri agreement controllers

A first-person source statement can leave sex unspecified

Azerbaijani first-person predicates identify the speaker without a male-versus-female agreement choice of the Kashmiri kind. A translation can consequently need information that a detached source sentence does not make visible.

Baerman’s Kashmiri report contrasts “chus para:n” with “chas para:n” in the first-person singular present progressive reading paradigm. The examples distinguish masculine and feminine speaker agreement while describing reading. They are displayed in the report’s scholarly transcription.

An Azerbaijani message saying that the writer is reading cannot select between those target forms simply from mən. The source speaker’s identity and intended perspective matter. A person forwarding somebody else’s first-person message should not substitute their own sex as the agreement controller.

The controller changes with the construction

The Kashmiri report distinguishes subject agreement in progressive constructions from patterns where transitive predicates mark the object’s gender and number. A target feminine form does not therefore always describe a female actor.

Azerbaijani case and person marking package the source participants differently. For a report about reading a document, identify the reader and the document first, then determine which target construction controls agreement. Looking only at the nearest pronoun can assign the ending to the wrong participant.

This is particularly important when a source sentence mentions one person acting on something associated with another. A grammatical feature on the target predicate is not automatically new information about either person’s sex. It may reflect the affected noun.

Past-time distinctions need the source timeline

Kashmiri has distinctions among past constructions that the cited studies analyse with proximate, indefinite and remote categories. They should not be treated as a single target ending for every Azerbaijani event placed before now.

Keep any source time expression or narrative sequence with the event. A report about a task just completed differs from an account of earlier experience, and the target predicate must fit the intended event presentation rather than a literal source label.

The target report also notes that future constructions do not mark gender in the same way as the illustrated progressive paradigm. A form learned from one tense cannot be generalised to every source timeline.

A similar suffix-rich appearance does not preserve clause order

Azerbaijani often places the predicate after substantial clause material. Koul’s research treats Kashmiri verb-second behaviour and its interaction with topic and pronominal material. Similar-looking rich morphology does not imply that the source sequence can be copied unchanged.

For an Azerbaijani update about who read or sent a document, retain the actor, the affected item and any recipient before checking target order. Short pronominal elements can contribute information that an isolated dictionary verb lacks.

For this direction, establish the relevant participant, the agreement controller and the source event’s time setting separately. Those decisions prevent a plausible Kashmiri ending from being interpreted through an Azerbaijani person suffix that performs a different grammatical job.
