Azerbaijani to Latin-script Inuktitut: similar letters do not mean similar word building

Use the Inuktitut sound values

The Latin-script Inuktitut option can look approachable to an Azerbaijani reader, but shared characters have language-specific values. Pirurvik’s ICI Roman orthography describes j with a sound comparable to English y, for example. Azerbaijani j does not have that value. Reading the target as if it were Azerbaijani can therefore distort an otherwise correct translation.

Inuktitut writing distinguishes doubled vowels and consonants. The documented word ataata has a long vowel represented by aa; the lesson also marks length in nakurmiik. Do not shorten repeated letters as accidental typing. In this orthography they represent pronunciation distinctions rather than emphasis or an elongated chat spelling.

The ICI system has the basic vowels a, i, and u, with e and o reserved for borrowed names in the lesson’s account. Azerbaijani has a richer written vowel inventory, including ə, ö, and ü. A source name may need careful retention, but ordinary translated Inuktitut words should follow target spelling rather than inherit Azerbaijani vowel letters.

Decompose the meaning before assembling the word

Azerbaijani oxuyuram contains the reading action and first-person information in one word. Inuktitut also identifies participants through endings, but the endings belong to a different system. The South Qikiqtaaluk examples aullaqtunga and aullaqtutit distinguish I am departing from you are departing, showing why the target’s final material is essential to meaning.

Pirurvik places roots at the beginning, affixes between the root and final grammatical ending, and participant information in the ending. A negative or past element from Azerbaijani must be assigned its appropriate function in the Inuktitut construction. Leaving it behind during root translation can create a grammatically complete target sentence with the wrong time or polarity.

Transitive endings need special attention because they can identify both actor and recipient. Azerbaijani can distribute that information across an inflected verb and separately marked noun phrases. The Inuktitut ending may therefore encode a relationship that has no one-word source equivalent; compactness is not proof that a participant was omitted.

Differentiate a route from a location

The Inuktitut noun endings -mi, -mut, and -mit distinguish at, to, and from a place in the introductory lessons. Azerbaijani also marks such relationships, but the translated stem must take the appropriate target ending. Do not preserve the source’s written ending simply because both languages attach spatial information after a noun.

For an Azerbaijani request involving a journey to the post office, separate intention from the destination phrase. A statement about wanting to go does not assert that the person has departed, arrived, or returned. The Inuktitut verb and location ending should cooperate to preserve that stage of the journey.

These Romanized examples document South Qikiqtaaluk rather than every regional form of Inuktitut. For a recipient who reads Latin script, the right delivery choice still involves actual target language and regional vocabulary. Checking doubled sounds, participant endings, and the distinction between at and towards is more useful than expecting the translation to resemble the Azerbaijani original in word length or letter sequence.
